Discovery sheds light on prehistoric Sunda Land

A remarkably preserved Homo erectus skull discovered in Indonesia’s Madura Strait may provide the first physical evidence of Sunda Land – a vast submerged landmass that connected Southeast Asia during the last Ice Age. The fossil, buried under layers of silt for approximately 140,000 years, was uncovered during sand dredging operations and could fundamentally change our understanding of early human migration patterns.

Rewriting the human migration story

The skull was initially found in 2011 during a major construction project, but its significance was only recently confirmed through detailed analysis published in Quaternary Environments and Human. Researchers recovered 6,000 animal fossils representing 36 species alongside the hominin remains, including evidence of Komodo dragons, buffalo, deer and elephants. Cut marks on some bones suggest sophisticated hunting practices were employed in the region.

“This period shows remarkable morphological diversity and mobility of hominin populations in the region,” said lead researcher Harold Berghuis. The findings suggest Homo erectus may have inhabited the now-submerged Sunda Land plains much earlier than previously believed, challenging existing theories about the geographic limits of early humans.

The sinking of Sunda Land

The discovery provides the first physical evidence of Homo erectus inhabiting Sunda Land, suggesting possible cultural exchange between isolated populations and revealing adaptive hunting strategies in coastal environments. “The Madura Strait hominins may have developed unique hunting techniques, or we might be seeing evidence of cultural exchange between groups,” Berghuis told LiveScience.

The lost landmass disappeared between 14,000 and 7,000 years ago when melting glaciers caused sea levels to rise over 120 meters. This dramatic sea level change submerged the vast tropical plains that once connected the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Java and Borneo into a single landmass.

Homo erectus: our ancient ancestors

The study provides new insights about these early humans who were the first to closely resemble modern humans. With taller, more muscular bodies featuring longer legs and shorter arms, Homo erectus potentially inhabited coastal environments much earlier than previously documented. This groundbreaking discovery opens new avenues for understanding how early humans adapted to changing landscapes and climate conditions during prehistoric times.

The 140,000-year-old Homo erectus skull found in Java represents the first physical evidence of humans in Sunda Land. Alongside the skull, researchers discovered 6,000 accompanying animal fossils. The landmass was submerged by rising sea levels between 7,000-14,000 years ago, challenging existing theories of human migration patterns in the region.
