Federal agents reported the black triangle UFO in the Pentagon’s newest files near a “national security site” in the western US in June. The 1,800 mph speed in many headlines is arithmetic on their naked-eye estimate, not a radar or sensor measurement.

The government hasn’t identified the object. The two official accounts of the sighting also don’t agree on how long it lasted.

What do the black triangle files say?

The Department of War, as the Trump administration now calls the Defense Department, posted its seventh batch of UFO records on Friday, October 23. The batch held 28 PDF files, CBS News reported.

Two of them cover the triangle. One is a memo from the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO), the Pentagon office that investigates UFO reports, summarizing a debrief with the agents. The other is the agents’ signed statement to the FBI. The government redacted the date and location.

The agents were watching the western horizon after a third agent nearby alerted them, according to CBS. It was dusk. They described a “nonreflective, dark black triangular object most resembling a delta wing drone,” with a wingspan of 9 to 15 feet.

In the AARO account, it rose 200 to 300 feet above a ridgeline, hovered for about 20 seconds, then dropped into a canyon at a speed the agents compared to a fighter jet. The memo says “absolute acoustic silence persisted throughout the high-velocity phase.” Binoculars showed no windows, rotors or exhaust openings, Scientific American reported.

The object didn’t vanish from every instrument. Through an infrared scope it “appeared hotter than ambient temperature,” the FBI statement says, according to CBS. A ground search the next morning found no wreckage or scorched ground.

Where does the 1,800 mph div come from?

The reports describe the object covering about 1.5 miles in three seconds, according to Axios and The National News Desk. Divide one by the other and you get 1,800 mph. Neither outlet reported a speed in miles per hour from the files, and none of the coverage we read cited a radar or sensor reading.

That matters, because a speed judged by eye at dusk is only as good as the guess about distance. Watching an object of unknown size, you can’t separate how big it is from how far away it is.

If the triangle was half as far away as the agents thought, it was also half as big and half as fast. That’s roughly 900 mph instead of 1,800.

The size claim runs into the same problem. At two miles, a 15-foot object would look about one-sixth as wide as the full Moon, by our calculation. That’s small enough that a range estimate could easily be off by a factor of two.

The silence is the other puzzle. Sound travels at about 767 mph at sea level, according to NASA, and anything flying faster drags a continuous shock wave, the sonic boom, behind it.

An object at 1,800 mph, low over a canyon, should have been loud. Either it wasn’t going that fast, or something very unusual happened. The files don’t settle which.

Do the two official accounts agree?

Not fully. The AARO memo describes a sequence lasting more than 30 seconds, while the FBI statement puts the whole sighting at about three seconds, IBTimes UK reported after comparing them. The wingspan estimates also differ, at 13 to 15 feet in the memo against 9 to 15 feet in the statement.

The FBI file includes nine images, but they aren’t photos of the object. They’re one photo of a mountain ridge with a black triangle shape placed at different points to show its path, IBTimes UK reported.

AARO itself drew no conclusion. Its memo says the case warrants “further investigation due to the close alignment of the phenomena’s reported morphological features” with other encounters federal agents have reported in the western US, CBS reported. We covered an earlier triangle account from these files, a former Pentagon employee’s sighting in Colorado, in August.

How do cases like this usually turn out?

Most turn out to be ordinary. In its latest annual report, covering May 2023 to June 2024, AARO said it received 757 reports. Every case it closed in that period turned out to be balloons, birds, drones, satellites or aircraft.

Another 444 cases “lacked sufficient data” to analyze, and AARO flagged 21 for further study. AARO said it had found “no evidence of extraterrestrial beings, activity, or technology.”

A small, dark, low-flying delta wing near a sensitive site is the profile of a drone, whether American or foreign. The FBI statement itself compares it to one. That would make it a security question rather than an alien one, and the files don’t say which.

What would settle it?

Data that doesn’t depend on human eyes. That would mean radar tracks, any recordings from the agents’ thermal scope, or video from site cameras. Range measurements would pin down the size and speed. None of that is in the released files, which contain no video or images of the object itself.

The files come from President Trump’s order of February 19, 2026, telling agencies to begin “identifying and releasing” government records on UFOs and alien life, Al Jazeera reported. We explained how the first batch worked when it came out in May.

Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said the department will release more files “on a rolling basis,” Anadolu Agency reported. The department hasn’t announced a date for the eighth batch.
