Uncovering life in orbit: A surprising find aboard China’s Tiangong Space Station

A previously unknown species of bacterium has been discovered aboard China’s Tiangong Space Station, and scientists believe it could play a vital role in supporting human life on Mars. The bacterium, named Niallia tiangongensis, was identified in June 2023 in surface samples collected aboard the Tiangong. These samples were returned to Earth by the Shenzhou 15 mission. Closely related to the Earth-dwelling species Niallia circulans, this new microbe is distinguished by a series of unique genetic traits that suggest it evolved in response to the extreme conditions of low Earth orbit.
