Health authorities on high alert as multiple countries report significant case increases

A new wave of COVID-19 is sweeping through Southeast Asia, with Hong Kong, Singapore, China, and Thailand reporting substantial increases in cases. Health officials in these densely populated regions have heightened their vigilance, and several countries are now urging residents to receive booster vaccinations as infection numbers climb.

According to Hong Kong’s Center for Health Protection, viral activity in the city has reached “quite high” levels. The percentage of respiratory samples testing positive for COVID-19 recently hit a one-year high in the region.

For the week ending May 3, Hong Kong documented 31 severe cases—the highest number in 12 months, Bloomberg reports. While current infection rates haven’t matched the peaks observed during the previous two years, increasing viral loads detected in sewage water, alongside rising Covid-related medical consultations and hospitalizations, indicate active transmission throughout the city of 7 million residents.

Singapore’s health ministry reported that COVID-19 cases increased by 28 percent to 14,200 in the week ending May 3, with daily hospitalizations rising approximately 30 percent.
