This groundbreaking study, led by Prem Kumar of Northwestern University in Illinois, demonstrated quantum teleportation using standard fibre optic cables, the same infrastructure that carries everyday internet traffic.

“This is incredibly exciting because nobody thought it was possible,” Kumar said in a statement to ScienceAlert. “Our work shows a path towards next-generation quantum and classical networks sharing a unified fibre optic infrastructure.
