Former Air National Guard member Jack Teixeira sentenced to 15 years in prison for sharing military secrets on gaming platform

A federal judge has handed down a 15-year prison sentence to Jack Teixeira, the former Massachusetts Air National Guard member who orchestrated one of the most significant military intelligence leaks in recent U.S. history by sharing classified Pentagon documents on a gaming social media platform.

Teixeira appeared before Judge Indira Talwani in the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts on Tuesday, where he received his sentence. The announcement came from the U.S. Attorney for Massachusetts following months of legal proceedings.

The charges and plea

In March, Teixeira pleaded guilty to six counts of willful retention and transmission of national defense information under the Espionage Act. His guilty plea came after nearly a year in federal custody, following his arrest by FBI agents in North Dighton, Massachusetts, in April 2023.

The security breach

According to court documents, Teixeira’s breach of national security involved:

  • Transcribing classified Pentagon documents
  • Sharing sensitive information on Discord, a platform primarily used by gamers
  • Leaking documents containing critical military intelligence, including: Details about equipment support to Ukrain and information about foreign threats to U.S. forces abroad

Background and access

The 2019 Air National Guard recruit, who held the rank of airman first class, was stationed at Otis Air National Guard Base on Cape Cod as a cyber transport systems journeyman. His access to sensitive information stemmed from a top-secret security clearance granted in July 2021, despite his relatively junior position.

Timeline of events

  • Early 2022: Teixeira reportedly began sharing classified documents
  • January 2023: Started posting documents on Discord
  • March 2023: Documents discovered online
  • April 2023: FBI arrest in Massachusetts
  • March 2024: Guilty plea entered
  • Present: 15-year sentence imposed

Impact and significance

The case represents one of the most serious breaches of classified information since Edward Snowden’s disclosures, highlighting vulnerabilities in the military’s information security protocols and the challenges of protecting sensitive information in the digital age.
