Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have reportedly moved their two children to a different school in Britain just days after they started classes, with security concerns said to be behind the decision.

Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, had only spent two days at the original school when the Sussexes decided to switch. According to reporting by Reuters, the family’s private security team was concerned about the distance and heavy traffic involved in the daily journey between the family’s new home and the school.

The decision comes as Harry and Meghan begin a new chapter in Britain after returning as full-time residents following several years in California.

Why did Harry and Meghan move their children?

The main concern reportedly involved the children’s daily commute.

The original school was considered too far from the Sussexes’ new residence, and the route was said to involve significant traffic. Their private security team reportedly concluded that the journey would make it more difficult to maintain appropriate protection during regular school runs.

A source close to the couple stressed that the move was not a reflection on the school itself or the care provided by its staff.

Instead, the decision was presented as a security-driven change focused on making the family’s daily movements easier to protect.

Where are Archie and Lilibet going to school now?

The identities of the schools have not been publicly disclosed.

That is consistent with the couple’s longstanding efforts to keep details about their children’s lives private, particularly information that could reveal their routines or locations.

The new school is understood to be closer to the family’s UK home, reducing the length and complexity of the children’s regular travel.

Why is school security such a major issue for the Sussexes?

Security has been one of the most contentious issues surrounding Harry’s relationship with the UK for years.

After stepping down as a working royal in 2020 and moving to the United States, Harry lost his entitlement to automatic police protection in Britain. He subsequently challenged the decision in court but lost his legal battle in 2025.

Harry had previously said he did not feel comfortable bringing Meghan and their children back to Britain without adequate protection.

The latest school move shows that security concerns remain a practical consideration even after the family’s return.

Why is Ravec reviewing their security?

Harry and Meghan are now facing a fresh review of their publicly funded security arrangements.

The Royal and VIP Executive Committee, known as Ravec, is responsible for assessing security arrangements for members of the royal family and other prominent public divs. Its membership includes representatives from the Home Office, police and the royal household.

The committee considers the threat facing an individual and the level of protection that may be justified.

Harry’s own security review began earlier, while the current process represents the first such review for Meghan since the couple stepped back from royal duties in 2020.

The fact that they have returned to Britain with two young children and now have regular routines, including school travel, provides authorities with additional circumstances to consider when assessing risk.

Has Harry received automatic police protection again?

No.

Harry and Meghan remain non-working royals and are not automatically entitled to taxpayer-funded police protection simply because they are members of the royal family.

Their security is assessed through the established government process rather than determined personally by King Charles or another member of the royal family.

Harry has strongly objected to the previous arrangement, arguing that his family faces genuine security risks in Britain.

His legal challenge over the government’s decision to provide protection on a bespoke basis rather than automatically was unsuccessful in 2025.

Why did Harry and Meghan return to the UK?

The Sussexes’ return marks a notable change after more than six years based in California.

The couple relocated to the United States after stepping back from royal duties in 2020, but announced in August 2026 that they intended to make their home in Britain again. Their children were enrolled in British schools as part of the move.

The family is understood to be living in a non-royal residence outside London.

Their return does not restore them to working-royal status. King Charles has recently reaffirmed that Harry and Meghan remain private individuals and non-working members of the royal family.

Why does their return make security planning more complicated?

A regular public schedule is easier to protect when movements are predictable and concentrated.

For Harry and Meghan, that creates a challenge because school runs, travel between home and other locations, public appearances and family activities can establish recurring patterns.

Ravec has reportedly asked the couple to provide information about their schedules and daily routines as part of the security assessment.

The children’s school commute is therefore more than an educational decision. It is also a recurring security route that must be assessed.

What has the UK government said?

The British government has maintained that security arrangements are determined through a rigorous and proportionate process.

Officials generally avoid discussing specific protective measures because publicly revealing details could undermine security.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham previously described the Sussexes’ security funding arrangements as a private matter and said the couple should be allowed to manage their return on that basis.

The government has also made clear that Harry and Meghan’s constitutional status remains unchanged despite their relocation.

Does the school switch mean there was a security threat at the original school?

Not necessarily.

The available reporting points to the practical difficulty of the journey rather than a specific, identified threat at the school itself.

That distinction is important. There is no public evidence in the reporting that the school was considered unsafe or that an attack or direct threat prompted the move.

Instead, the concern appears to have been about the logistics of repeatedly transporting the children along a long and congested route.

What happens next with their security review?

Ravec will assess the available intelligence and determine what level of protection, if any, should be provided.

No final decision had been announced in the latest reports. Harry’s review was already underway, while Meghan’s assessment is being conducted separately.

The school change could become one of several practical factors considered as officials assess the couple’s current circumstances in Britain.

For the Sussexes, the episode underlines a reality of their return: living in Britain again means confronting the security dispute they left unresolved when they moved to the US.

And for Archie and Lilibet, that dispute has now reached somewhere far more ordinary than a royal residence or courtroom: the school run.
