NASA astronaut Sunita Williams celebrates 59th birthday in space

On Thursday, September 19, NASA astronaut Sunita “Suni” Williams marked her 59th birthday in an extraordinary setting — aboard the International Space Station (ISS). Currently on her third spaceflight, Williams celebrated the milestone while continuing to maintain the space laboratory, which orbits 400 kilometers above Earth. With several months remaining before her return to Earth, Williams dedicated her special day to critical tasks that ensure the ISS’s smooth operation.

Celebrating in space: a day of essential tasks

Instead of the usual birthday festivities, Sunita Williams spent her day replacing filters in the ISS’s waste and hygiene compartment, commonly referred to as the space bathroom. She performed this vital task alongside fellow NASA astronaut Donald “Don” Pettit to maintain safe and healthy living conditions aboard the station. The astronauts also participated in a conference with Mission Control in Houston, Texas, where they discussed ongoing mission objectives and future tasks, joined by Barry “Butch” Wilmore.

Williams also co-organized cargo within the Columbus laboratory module, a key responsibility for optimizing the use of limited space and resources in the station.
