A Couple Found Human Skeletons Under a Church And Chose to Live With Them
February 3, 2026
04:14
When Lucy and Rhys Thomas began converting a centuries-old church in Wales into a family home, they expected dust, cracked stone, and a few surprises typical of historic renovations. What they did not expect was the scale of what lay beneath the floor. Instead of a handful of remains, the couple uncovered more than 80 human skeletons under a church they planned to call home.
The discovery, made during the renovation of St. Peter’s Church in Peterstone Wentlooge, has since drawn international attention. It raises questions that go far beyond a single family’s unusual living arrangement. Why were so many people buried under a church? What are the legal and ethical rules around human remains found on private property? And why did this couple decide not to move the skeletons at all?
This is the story behind the human skeletons under a church and what it reveals about history, archaeology, and modern life inside ancient buildings.

Lucy and Rhys Thomas purchased St. Peter’s Church, a structure founded in 1142, with the intention of converting it into a home for their family. Like many buyers of historic religious buildings in the UK, they were aware that burials were a possibility. Churches often served as grave sites for centuries.
Before construction began, an archaeologist advised them to expect a small number of remains, likely five or six. That estimate proved dramatically wrong.
As workers lifted the church floor, skeletons began to appear one after another. In total, more than 80 sets of human remains were found buried beneath the stone flooring. Some were laid out individually. Others were grouped in ways that suggested family ties.

Lucy Thomas later told British media that the initial discoveries were unsettling, but the shock gradually gave way to acceptance. What began as a grim surprise became a historical reality that the family chose to respect rather than erase.
To modern eyes, the idea of living above human remains may feel unsettling. Historically, however, burial under a church floor was not unusual, especially in medieval Britain.
From the Middle Ages through the early modern period, churches were considered sacred ground. Being buried close to the altar or within the church itself was often reserved for

Burial inside the church was seen as spiritually advantageous. Proximity to holy spaces was believed to offer protection for the soul and a closer connection to God.
The Thomas family noted that some skeletons appeared to be buried together, including adults and children. This aligns with historical practices in which family members were interred near one another, particularly if they shared social standing or patronage rights.
While the number found at St. Peter’s Church is high, the presence of human remains under old churches is not rare.

Across the UK and Europe, renovation projects in medieval buildings frequently uncover burials. In some cases, hundreds of remains have been documented beneath cathedrals and parish churches.
Key factors that influence how many remains are found include
In St. Peter’s case, nearly 900 years of continuous use meant generations of burials accumulated beneath successive layers of stone.

After the discovery, Lucy and Rhys Thomas faced a choice. They could apply to have the remains removed and reburied, or they could preserve them where they lie.
They chose the latter.
Removing human remains can be legally permitted, but it often raises ethical concerns. The couple felt that disturbing the skeletons, many of which had rested undisturbed for centuries, would be disrespectful.

Lucy Thomas has said that seeing how the bodies were arranged made the burials feel personal rather than abstract. In her words, these were not anonymous bones but people with relationships and stories.
In the UK, human remains discovered during construction are typically handled under archaeological supervision. If the remains are not at risk of damage and no legal requirement exists to remove them, leaving them in place can be an acceptable option.
In this case, the couple worked with experts to document the remains and then designed their renovation around them.

Turning a medieval church into a livable family house is no small task, even without skeletons involved. The Thomases spent four years completing the conversion.
Rather than stripping the building of its identity, the couple chose to retain many original features, including
The goal was not to erase the building’s past but to adapt it.

To protect both the remains and the living space, the couple installed underfloor heating, effectively sealing the skeletons beneath a modern surface. The original engraved stone floor was repurposed into a patio, blending history with practical reuse.
The finished home includes modern comforts such as a bar and a hot tub, creating a striking contrast between mthe edieval burial ground and contemporary domestic life.
One of the most common questions raised by this story is whether it is safe or even legal to live in a home with human skeletons beneath it.

From a public health perspective, centuries-old human remains pose no biological risk. Any pathogens that once existed would have long since degraded. Proper sealing of the floor ensures no exposure.
In the UK, discoveries like this fall under a mix of planning law, church law, and archaeological regulation. The key requirements usually include:
Once those steps are followed, living above preserved remains is legally permissible.

For authoritative context, readers could be directed to guidance from Historic England or the UK Ministry of Justice, both of which publish rules on the treatment of buried remains.
The discovery of human skeletons under a church sits at the intersection of history, mortality, and everyday life. It challenges modern assumptions about how the past should be handled.
Buildings like St. Peter’s Church are not static artifacts. They are layered records of human life, death, faith, and community. Living in such a space forces an acknowledgment that modern life is built quite literally on what came before.
In many Western societies, death is kept at a distance. Cemeteries are separated from homes, and remains are rarely encountered directly. Stories like this disrupt that separation, which may explain the fascination.
The choice to live with human skeletons under a church is not a model everyone would follow. It does, however, reflect a growing trend in heritage preservation that favours adaptation over removal.
Rather than turning historic buildings into museums or stripping them of inconvenient elements, some owners choose coexistence with the past. In doing so, they keep these structures alive rather than frozen in time.
