US President Donald Trump’s highly anticipated arrival at the World Economic Forum in Davos hit an unexpected snag this week after Air Force One experienced a minor electrical issue, forcing the aircraft to turn back shortly after takeoff. While the incident did not pose a threat to the President’s safety, it delayed his arrival in Switzerland and briefly put the spotlight on the rarely discussed mechanics of presidential travel.

Within hours, the White House confirmed that Trump had switched aircraft and was back en route to Davos—albeit several hours behind schedule. Still, the delay comes at a sensitive moment, with Trump set to face pointed questions from global leaders amid tensions over Greenland and NATO relations.

What happened to Air Force One during Trump’s Davos trip?

The incident unfolded Tuesday night after Air Force One departed from Joint Base Andrews, the Maryland airbase that serves as the primary launch point for presidential travel.

A technical issue mid-flight

According to the White House, the aircraft had been in the air for about an hour when the onboard crew identified what was described as a “minor electrical issue.” Out of caution, the decision was made to return to base rather than continue across the Atlantic.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed the sequence of events in an official statement shared on X:

“After takeoff, the AF1 crew identified a minor electrical issue. Out of an abundance of caution, AF1 is returning to Joint Base Andrews. The President and team will board a different aircraft and continue on to Switzerland.”

Photographs later showed vehicles rushing onto the tarmac as the aircraft landed, underscoring the seriousness with which even minor technical anomalies are treated when the President is aboard.

Was President Trump ever in danger?

In short: no, according to US officials.

Why “minor” still means turning back

Air Force One—technically a highly customized Boeing 747, is designed with multiple redundancies. Many systems are backed up several times over, allowing the aircraft to continue operating safely even if one component fails.

However, when it comes to presidential travel, protocol favors maximum caution over minimum risk. Even a small electrical irregularity can trigger a return, especially on long-haul international flights.

Key reasons the plane likely turned back include:

• Electrical systems support navigation, communications, and onboard security
• Diagnosing issues is safer on the ground than mid-ocean
• Backup aircraft are always on standby for precisely this reason

This is not unprecedented. Past presidents, including Barack Obama and George W. Bush, have also experienced flight delays or aircraft swaps due to technical issues, most of which never escalated beyond inconvenience.

How did Trump continue to Davos?

After safely returning to Joint Base Andrews, President Trump boarded a US Air Force C-32, a modified Boeing 757 typically used for domestic travel and shorter international routes.

Why a C-32 was used

While Air Force One is the most recognizable presidential aircraft, it is not the only option. The C-32 offers:

• Secure communications
• Defensive countermeasures
• The ability to operate from a wider range of airports

The switch allowed Trump and his delegation to resume the trip with minimal additional delay. By the time global markets opened, the White House confirmed the president was safely en route to Switzerland.

How late will Trump be to the World Economic Forum?

Speaking in Davos, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the president was expected to arrive approximately three hours late due to the electrical issue.

“I believe President Trump is going to be about three hours late. I haven’t seen the updated schedule,” Bessent told reporters.

While a few hours may seem minor, timing matters at Davos, where tightly packed schedules include

• Bilateral meetings with heads of state
• Closed-door sessions with business leaders
• High-profile speeches watched closely by global markets

Any delay can compress agendas and increase scrutiny—especially for a leader whose remarks are often closely parsed for policy signals.

Why Trump’s Davos appearance matters this year

Trump’s visit to the World Economic Forum 2026 is among the most closely watched of the summit, not because of economics alone, but because of geopolitics.

The Greenland controversy looms large

In recent weeks, Trump has reignited debate by floating the idea of a US takeover of Greenland, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. The remarks have unsettled:

• Denmark’s government
• NATO allies
• European leaders are already wary of US unilateralism

At Davos, Trump is expected to address global trade, security, and energy—but Greenland is likely to dominate private conversations and public reactions.

Why do technical issues with Air Force One get so much attention

Even though officials stressed that the electrical issue was minor, incidents involving Air Force One often attract outsized attention—and for good reason.

More than just a plane

Air Force One functions as:

• A flying command center
• A secure communications hub
• A symbol of US power and stability

Any disruption, however small, can spark questions about readiness, security, or reliability, especially during international crises or diplomatic summits.

That said, aviation experts often note that turning back is a sign the system worked, not that it failed.

Has this happened before?

Yes. Presidential aircraft delays are rare, but not unheard of.

Examples:

• Mechanical delays during overseas trips under President Obama
• Weather-related returns during the Bush administration
• Engine and sensor issues on backup aircraft

What to watch next at Davos

Despite the delay, Trump’s arrival is still expected to dominate headlines once he takes the stage.

Key moments to watch include:

• His World Economic Forum address
• Reactions from European leaders
• Any clarification—or escalation—on Greenland
• Signals on US trade and foreign policy priorities

Markets and diplomats alike will be listening closely, not just to what Trump says, but to how his message is received in a room full of skeptics and allies.

TL;DR

• Air Force One returned to base after a minor electrical issue was detected mid-flight.
• Trump was never in danger and switched to a backup aircraft.
• His arrival in Davos was delayed by about three hours.
• The timing matters, as Trump’s visit comes amid heightened tensions over Greenland and NATO relations.
• The incident highlights how presidential travel prioritizes caution above all else.
