Scientists Discover Deep Fracture In Earth’s Mantle Under India
November 11, 2025

A new study suggests that the Indian tectonic plate is splitting into two deep beneath Tibet, creating a massive fracture in Earth’s mantle. This “delamination” could reshape our understanding of Himalayan formation, tectonic movement, and future earthquake risks across South Asia.
For decades, scientists have known that the Indian tectonic plate has been slowly colliding with the Eurasian plate, a continental crash that began around 60 million years ago. That collision forced the crust upward, giving birth to the Himalayas, Earth’s tallest mountain range, and the Tibetan Plateau, one of the most geologically active regions on the planet.
Until recently, geologists believed the Indian plate was simply sliding beneath the Eurasian plate like one slab disappearing under another. But new evidence suggests the story runs much deeper, literally.

At the 2023 American Geophysical Union (AGU) conference, researchers presented seismic data indicating that the Indian plate isn’t just subducting; it’s splitting apart. Its lower, denser layer is peeling away and sinking into the mantle while the upper crust continues to push northward under Tibet.
This geological process, known as “delamination,” marks one of the most dramatic internal deformations of a continental plate ever observed.
In geology, delamination refers to a tectonic plate’s dense lower section detaching and sinking into the Earth’s mantle, while the upper portion remains buoyant. Think of it like a cake layer sliding off its base.

According to Science.org, this process could explain long-standing mysteries about the formation and uplift of the Tibetan Plateau. The discovery adds a new dimension to our understanding of how continents collide and evolve over millions of years.
“It’s not just one plate plunging beneath another, it’s more like the Indian plate is tearing itself apart from below,” said one of the study’s co-authors, as reported by Science.
This finding challenges conventional models that depict the Indian and Eurasian plates as relatively rigid blocks. Instead, it paints a more dynamic picture of Earth’s crust, where deep-mantle interactions continue to sculpt the surface we live on.

Researchers analyzed data from 94 seismic stations across southern Tibet, focusing on two key types of earthquake waves:
The way these waves traveled through the region revealed disruptions and velocity changes consistent with deep fractures, signs of a tearing or peeling process inside the Indian plate.
These seismic “signatures” align with a 2025 Nature Communications Earth & Environment study showing slab tearing and mantle delamination beneath southeast Tibet. The seismic tomography visualizes a zone where dense lithospheric material detaches and descends into the mantle, confirming the phenomenon isn’t limited to shallow crustal layers.

Supporting this model, researchers also found unusual helium isotope ratios in hot springs scattered across Tibet. The presence of helium-3, a rare isotope originating in the mantle, suggests that fractures now reach deep enough for gases from Earth’s interior to escape to the surface.
As India Today reported, the discovery of these mantle gases “provides chemical proof that the lower plate is fragmenting and sinking.”
Together, seismic and geochemical data reveal that the Indian plate is not a single monolithic slab but a structure undergoing internal disintegration, an extraordinary view of a plate literally breaking beneath our feet.

The Himalayas are often described as a “frozen collision” between two continents. But if delamination is occurring, it means the collision is still evolving, and the forces that built the world’s highest peaks may be more complex than once thought.
Scientists now believe that the peeling of the Indian plate could be one reason the Tibetan Plateau continues to rise even after millions of years of compression. The upward “rebound” caused by the sinking lower plate could lift the crust further, creating new mountain ranges and fault lines.
Perhaps the most practical consequence of this finding is seismic. If the Indian plate is tearing and sinking unevenly, it could redistribute tectonic stress in unpredictable ways, altering where and how future earthquakes might occur.

As NDTV noted, this deep-mantle fracture could help explain the irregular distribution of major earthquakes across the Himalayas, from Nepal to northern India. By refining seismic models using this new understanding, scientists may eventually identify regions more vulnerable to large-magnitude events.
Despite its breakthrough nature, the delamination model isn’t universally accepted. Some geologists caution that the available data, while persuasive, still represents a “snapshot” of an ongoing process that may take millions of years to complete.

Future research will require denser seismic networks, high-resolution tomography, and real-time monitoring of gas emissions to refine our understanding.
This discovery marks a turning point in how scientists visualize plate tectonics. The Indian plate’s internal fracture could become a natural laboratory for studying how continents deform under immense pressure.
It also highlights that our planet’s interior remains far more dynamic than textbooks suggest. Even after 60 million years of collision, the Indian-Eurasian interaction continues to reshape the landscape, both above and below ground.
Researchers are now investigating whether similar delamination events might occur in other continental collisions, such as the Andes or the Alps. If confirmed, it would mean that plate peeling could be a common mechanism in shaping mountains worldwide.
