A bizarre image from Afghanistan has gone viral online, showing Taliban fighters holding up what appear to be the pants of Pakistani soldiers, reportedly taken after intense border clashes between the two countries. However, Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid disputed that claim, insisting the ceasefire came “at the insistence of the Pakistani side.” Mujahid added that Taliban troops were ordered to hold fire, provided Pakistan did not resume aggression.

The United Nations’ human rights chief, Volker Türk, welcomed the temporary calm and urged both governments to protect civilians and “commit to a lasting ceasefire.”

Taliban’s “pants parade” goes viral

In one of the most striking visuals from the conflict’s aftermath, Taliban fighters in Afghanistan were seen displaying trousers allegedly belonging to Pakistani soldiers.

The image, first circulated on X (formerly Twitter) by BBC journalist Daud Junbish, was captioned:

Other unverified videos showed Taliban troops parading tanks, weapons, and captured vehicles, reportedly seized from Pakistani positions. Some fighters were seen cheering and waving the clothing items in celebration, a symbolic gesture interpreted online as a mockery of Pakistan’s retreat.

Social media users quickly seized upon the spectacle, joking that Pakistani troops were “caught with their pants down” — a phrase that became literal in this context.

While the Taliban portrayed the truce as a tactical success, Pakistan framed it as a humanitarian pause.

Islamabad accused the Afghan Taliban administration of harboring militants responsible for recent attacks inside Pakistan, particularly members of the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

Kabul rejected those allegations, countering that Pakistan’s army had launched unprovoked assaults on Afghan territory and was spreading misinformation to undermine Afghanistan’s sovereignty.

The Taliban further accused Islamabad of sheltering ISIS-linked militants, a claim Pakistan has firmly denied.

Civilian toll and humanitarian impact

The clashes inflicted a heavy toll on border communities.

In Spin Boldak, Taliban officials reported over a dozen civilians killed and about 100 injured following Pakistani strikes. Pakistan, on the other hand, claimed four civilians were wounded in Taliban attacks on its Chaman district, directly across the border.

Humanitarian organization Emergency NGO, which operates a surgical center for war victims in Kabul, confirmed receiving five bodies and 35 injured people after nearby explosions.

“We started receiving ambulances filled with wounded people… they have shrapnel wounds, blunt trauma, and burns,” said Dejan Panic, the group’s country director.

Power outages were also reported across parts of Kabul due to damage to electricity cables during the bombardment.

By Thursday morning, Pakistani officials stationed near the border told AFP that no new incidents of violence were reported overnight, and the ceasefire remained intact.

“Additional paramilitary troops have been deployed to counter potential militant activity that could jeopardise the ceasefire,” a senior security official in Peshawar said.

Still, analysts warn the situation remains fragile. Both nations accuse each other of failing to control armed groups operating near the porous border, long a flashpoint for tension and mistrust.
