The first weekend of the 2025 college football season lived up to its reputation: chaotic, dramatic, and full of surprises. Now that the dust has settled, the Coaches Poll Week 2 rankings are here, and they’ve shaken up the national picture in a big way.

In a headline game that set the tone for the season, defending national champion Ohio State toppled No. 1 Texas in a showdown that lived up to the hype. Elsewhere, Florida State stunned Alabama, LSU proved its championship credentials against Clemson, and a few preseason hopefuls already find themselves on shaky ground. So, what do the latest rankings tell us about the road ahead? Let’s break it down.

Who’s on Top in the Coaches Poll Week 2 Rankings?

Ohio State’s statement win over Texas was enough to push the Buckeyes into the No. 1 spot. They claimed 59 first-place votes, leaving little doubt that voters see them as the team to beat once again.

Why Did Ohio State Leapfrog Texas?

Ohio State didn’t just beat Texas—they controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. Cornerback Davison Igbinosun’s big plays in coverage highlighted a defense that looked playoff-ready in Week 1.

For the Longhorns, the loss doesn’t end their title hopes, but it does puncture the aura they built after returning much of last year’s roster. The Longhorns fell to No. 6, but they remain the highest-ranked one-loss team in the poll.

Which Teams Made the Biggest Statement?

LSU Tigers

The Tigers’ gritty 17–10 win over Clemson showed they can grind out games against elite defenses. Quarterback Garrett Nussmeier’s poise in the closing minutes gave LSU enough for voters to bump them into the Top 4.

Florida State Seminoles

Florida State’s upset of No. 8 Alabama was one of the weekend’s shockers. The win vaulted the Seminoles into the rankings at No. 19, signaling they’re a team to watch in the ACC.

Penn State Nittany Lions

Penn State climbed to No. 2, snagging six first-place votes. They were dominant in their opener, and with an early Big Ten schedule that looks favorable, they could hold onto that spot until their clash with Ohio State later this fall.

Who’s in Trouble Already?

Alabama Crimson Tide

The Tide’s fall to No. 20 is their lowest ranking in years. While one loss doesn’t doom their season, the way they were outplayed physically against Florida State raises questions about whether Nick Saban’s squad is still the SEC’s standard-bearer.

Clemson Tigers

After a loss to LSU, Clemson slipped to No. 8. It’s not a disastrous ranking, but their margin for error is now razor-thin if they want to stay in the playoff conversation.

Kansas State Wildcats

Kansas State’s early-season loss pushed them out of the poll entirely. For a program that’s been climbing steadily, it’s a step backward.

What Does the Coaches Poll Tell Us About the Playoff Picture?

The poll reflects not just who won but how they won. Style points still matter, especially in the early weeks when resumes are thin.

• Ohio State and Penn State look like the Big Ten’s clear frontrunners.
• Georgia remains in striking distance at No. 3, and voters still trust their depth.
• LSU has proven it belongs in the title conversation.
• Texas is down but not out—the Longhorns still control their destiny if they can rebound.

With the expanded College Football Playoff format debuting this season, slipping outside the Top 4 isn’t the death blow it used to be. Still, early momentum can define a season, and Ohio State has seized it.

How Is the Coaches Poll Compiled?

For readers new to the process:

• The US LBM Coaches Poll is conducted weekly during the season.
• A panel of FBS head coaches is randomly selected by conference.
• Each coach submits a Top 25 ballot, with points awarded in reverse order (25 for first place, 24 for second, and so on).
• The results are tallied to produce the official poll.

This makes the Coaches Poll a reflection of how actual coaches—not just media members—view the national picture.

What to Watch in Week 2

Looking ahead, several matchups could shake things up again:

• Penn State vs. West Virginia – A chance for the Nittany Lions to prove they deserve that No. 2 spot.
• Texas vs. Miami – A Top 10 showdown that could define both teams’ seasons.
• Florida State vs. Clemson – An early ACC clash that could swing the conference race.

Another weekend of drama could mean yet another shuffle when Week 3 rankings arrive.
