Putin Reportedly Paid $250,000 In Cash To Refuel Jets in Alaska Amid US Sanctions

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s delegation had to pay $250,000 in cash to refuel their jets in Alaska during the recent US-Russia summit. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the unusual requirement highlighted the bite of US sanctions, which block Russia from accessing Western banking systems. The Alaska Summit also featured Trump’s meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, where discussions on long-term security guarantees underscored how far the war remains from resolution.
When Russian President Vladimir Putin landed in Alaska last week for the US-Russia summit, his delegation faced a peculiar yet telling hurdle: they had to pay nearly $250,000 in cash to refuel their planes before returning to Moscow.
According to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the requirement underscored the reach of US financial sanctions, even when temporarily eased to allow Putin’s visit. The incident has since become a symbolic snapshot of how sanctions have reshaped Russia’s global operations.

The Russian delegation arrived in Alaska on three separate jets on August 15. Each refueling cost about $85,000, and the total bill came to roughly a quarter of a million dollars. Because Russian banks are cut off from the US and European financial systems, standard electronic transactions or card payments were not an option.
“When the Russians landed in Alaska … they had to offer to pay in cash to refuel their aeroplanes because they can’t use our banking system,” Rubio told NBC News. “They face consequences every single day.”
This detail illustrates how sanctions affect even the most basic logistical needs of Russian state operations abroad. Russian journalists and officials accompanying the delegation also reported being unable to use mobile networks or bank cards during their stay.

While sanctions were partially relaxed for the summit itself — allowing Putin and his team to travel to US soil — Washington maintained financial barriers to avoid normalizing Russia’s access to the Western system.
The cash refueling story may sound trivial, but it highlights several deeper realities:
For Russia, the need to carry stacks of cash for aviation fuel is not just a logistical oddity, it’s a reminder of how restricted its international reach has become.

Putin’s Alaska trip was part of a high-profile US-Russia summit hosted by President Donald Trump. The meeting came amid ongoing tensions over the war in Ukraine, now well into its third year.
The Alaska Summit shows the paradox of current US-Russia relations:
The coming weeks could determine whether the Alaska Summit leads to any substantive diplomatic opening. Trump’s team suggested another round of talks may follow, possibly in Europe, depending on whether Putin and Zelensky signal willingness for compromise.
But for now, the optics are clear: sanctions are not just abstract policy tools. They shape the very mechanics of statecraft, down to how a presidential plane is refueled on foreign soil.
