Antarctica could be connected to the global internet through a dedicated undersea fiber-optic cable under a proposal being studied by Chile.

A feasibility study commissioned by Chile’s telecommunications regulator, Subtel, has concluded that a submarine connection across the Drake Passage is technically possible. The shorter option would stretch roughly 1,600 kilometers and cost an estimated US$370 million, while a larger system covering more Antarctic bases would run for more than 4,100 kilometers and cost about US$621 million, or roughly Rs 5,933 crore at the conversion reflected in current reports.

The idea addresses a problem that is easy to overlook: Antarctica has no direct fiber-optic connection to the global telecommunications network. Research stations rely heavily on satellite links, while some large volumes of scientific data are still physically transported away from the continent on storage devices.

The proposed cable could change that by allowing Antarctic research data to move in real time.

But reaching the world’s most remote continent with a cable is considerably harder than connecting two conventional coastal cities.

Why does Antarctica need an undersea cable?

Antarctic research stations depend heavily on satellite communications.

Satellite links provide essential internet and communications services, but bandwidth is limited and has to be prioritized. Scientific missions therefore compete for a relatively constrained communications resource.

Large scientific datasets can also create a particular problem.

Researchers generate enormous amounts of information from instruments, observatories, satellites and other experiments. Without a high-capacity fiber connection, transferring that information can be slow and inefficient.

Juan Pablo, a team leader associated with the feasibility work, described the current system as moving information away from Antarctica in “suitcases full of hard drives.”

A fiber-optic cable would fundamentally change that arrangement.

Instead of physically transporting storage devices, researchers could transmit data continuously to facilities in Chile and elsewhere.

What is Chile proposing?

The feasibility study examined two possible configurations.

The first is the smaller, minimum configuration. It would be approximately 1,600 kilometers long and connect Punta Arenas and Puerto Williams in southern Chile with three Chilean Antarctic facilities:

• Presidente Eduardo Frei Montalva
• Bernardo O’Higgins
• Arturo Prat

The estimated cost is approximately US$370 million.

The second option is much more ambitious.

It would stretch more than 4,100 kilometers and connect nine Antarctic landing points. In addition to Chilean facilities, the proposed network would serve research stations operated by the United States, United Kingdom, Argentina and Brazil.

The larger system is estimated to cost approximately US$621 million.

That makes the project more than a national telecommunications initiative. The expanded configuration would effectively create shared digital infrastructure for several countries conducting scientific research in Antarctica.

How fast could the Antarctic cable transmit data?

The proposed architecture would provide dedicated fiber pairs to Antarctic landing points.

The feasibility work puts the capacity of each landing at roughly 15 to 30 terabits per second, depending on the configuration and transmission equipment used.

That is vastly different from the limited bandwidth available through many satellite connections.

The point is not simply faster browsing for people working at research stations.

The more important benefit would be high-volume scientific data transmission.

Researchers could potentially move enormous datasets continuously instead of waiting for ships or aircraft to transport physical drives.

Where would the cable run?

The proposed system would cross the Drake Passage, the notoriously rough stretch of ocean separating South America from the Antarctic Peninsula.

The shorter route would connect southern Chile with Antarctic research facilities around the northern Antarctic Peninsula.

The longer route would extend the network farther into Antarctica’s research infrastructure and connect facilities operated by several countries.

The route is significant because Chile already has telecommunications infrastructure extending into the far south.

Puerto Williams and Punta Arenas therefore provide logical starting points for an Antarctic connection.

Chile has been discussing the idea for years. In 2021, Subtel and the Chilean government already described a potential fiber link between southern Chile and Antarctica and began exploring its feasibility.

Why is Antarctica so difficult to connect?

The biggest obstacle is not the distance alone.

It is the environment.

Antarctica presents several engineering problems that are unusual even for the subsea cable industry.

The study identifies extreme weather, installation challenges and ice scour near Antarctic landing points as major considerations.

An undersea cable normally rests on or beneath the seabed.

Near the Antarctic shoreline, however, enormous icebergs can extend deep underwater.

As icebergs move, their submerged portions can scrape across the seabed, potentially damaging cables.

That process is known as ice scour.

How would engineers protect the cable from ice?

One proposed solution is horizontal directional drilling at the Antarctic landings.

Instead of bringing the cable directly onto the exposed seabed near shore, engineers would drill below the vulnerable zone and bring the cable farther inland.

The proposed design also calls for double-armored cable to provide additional protection against the harsh environment.

These measures would be particularly important because repairing a damaged cable in Antarctica would be far more difficult than repairing one near a populated coastline.

The cable could be thousands of kilometers from major repair facilities, and weather conditions severely restrict the periods during which ships can safely operate.

Why can the cable only be installed during a short window?

Antarctic weather dramatically limits construction schedules.

According to the feasibility work, installation would have to be spread across three austral summers, with the practical working window concentrated around December and January.

That constraint could turn a project that might take months elsewhere into a multi-year construction program.

A vessel would need to reach the region during favorable conditions, perform cable-laying operations and potentially complete landing work before weather deteriorates.

Any significant delay could push work into another Antarctic summer.

Could the cable also become a giant scientific sensor?

Yes.

One of the most interesting aspects of the proposal is that the cable would not necessarily be used only for telecommunications.

The project envisions embedding SMART sensors along the seafloor.

These sensors could monitor parameters including ocean-bottom temperature, pressure and seismic activity.

That would turn the communications network into a scientific observation system as well.

Such measurements could help researchers study changes in the ocean and monitor geological activity.

The cable could therefore serve two purposes at once: transporting scientific data and generating new scientific data.

Why does real-time connectivity matter to Antarctic science?

Modern research increasingly depends on rapid access to large datasets.

Consider a scientific instrument continuously generating high-resolution observations. Under limited connectivity, researchers may have to prioritize what data gets transmitted immediately and what gets stored for later physical transport.

A high-capacity fiber connection would remove much of that bottleneck.

Researchers on different continents could work with the same datasets almost immediately.

Specialists could also potentially monitor experiments remotely and respond more quickly when instruments detect unusual events.

That could make Antarctic science more collaborative and less isolated.

Would ordinary people in Antarctica get better internet?

The primary purpose of the project is scientific and institutional connectivity, not consumer broadband.

The proposed system is designed around research facilities and international scientific cooperation.

That said, researchers and staff living at Antarctic stations could benefit from improved communications as a secondary effect.

Better connectivity could support video calls, remote medical assistance, education, teleconferencing and other services.

But the cable should not be described as a plan to turn Antarctica into a conventional connected consumer market.

Its main justification is scientific infrastructure.

Why would several countries benefit?

Antarctica is home to research programs from dozens of countries.

The optimal cable route is designed around that multinational scientific presence.

The longer 4,100-kilometer configuration would connect facilities operated by Chile, the United States, United Kingdom, Argentina and Brazil.

That could distribute the cost and benefits across several national research programs.

It could also strengthen collaboration by giving different stations access to the same high-capacity communications infrastructure.

Is the project approved?

No.

This is one of the most important distinctions to make.

The feasibility study concluded that the project is technically viable, but that does not mean construction has been approved or funded.

The study has been submitted to Chile’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and is moving into a broader government and international consultation process.

Officials have also indicated that Chile would not be expected to finance the entire project alone because of its multinational nature.

Funding, international participation, environmental considerations and procurement would all have to be resolved before construction could begin.

Why could it take eight years?

The proposed timeline is driven by far more than cable manufacturing.

The project would require regulatory approvals, international agreements, financing, environmental and Antarctic assessments, detailed route planning and specialized construction.

Chile’s feasibility work estimates that the overall process could take around eight years.

That means technical feasibility is only the first hurdle.

A cable can be possible to build without being immediately practical to finance and deploy.

What are the environmental concerns?

The proposed cable would cross an environmentally sensitive marine region.

Any construction would therefore have to account for seabed disturbance, wildlife, marine traffic and the requirements of the Antarctic environmental governance system.

The feasibility study itself includes environmental and social considerations as part of the project’s evaluation framework.

The project’s designers also have to balance protection against ice scour with minimizing unnecessary intervention in the Antarctic environment.

That could become an important part of the approval process.

Could this change Antarctica’s relationship with the rest of the world?

Potentially.

Antarctica has traditionally been one of the most isolated inhabited regions on Earth.

That isolation is partly geographic and partly technological.

A dedicated fiber connection would not make the continent easy to reach physically, but it could dramatically reduce its digital isolation.

Research stations could become high-speed nodes in the global scientific network rather than remote facilities dependent on comparatively limited satellite communications.

That could affect how research is conducted, shared and coordinated.

The bigger picture

The proposed Antarctic submarine cable is not simply an internet project.

It is an attempt to build digital infrastructure in one of the most difficult environments on the planet.

The shorter version would cover about 1,600 kilometers and cost roughly US$370 million. The larger system would exceed 4,100 kilometers and cost about US$621 million.

The potential payoff is equally significant.

Researchers could transmit data in real time rather than relying as heavily on satellite links or physically transporting storage drives. A sensor-equipped cable could also provide continuous observations of the seafloor.

But the hardest part may not be laying fiber across the Drake Passage.

It will be protecting the cable from ice, completing construction during narrow Antarctic weather windows, securing international cooperation and finding the hundreds of millions of dollars required to build the system.

For now, Antarctica remains disconnected from the world’s major submarine fibre networks.

That could eventually change.

But the first step is no longer asking whether an Antarctic cable is physically possible.

Chile’s feasibility study says it is.

The next question is whether governments can agree to build it.
