Quick Summary

Shane Tamura, the gunman behind the Manhattan shooting, killed four people and died by suicide on the 33rd floor of a Midtown skyscraper. In the absence of an official motive, social media users have floated conspiracy theories involving Freemasonry, numerology, and corporate symbolism. However, there is no verified evidence linking Tamura’s actions to any ideological or symbolic agenda. Authorities are continuing their investigation.

What happened during the 345 Park Avenue shooting?

On Monday, July 28, 2025, chaos erupted at 345 Park Avenue, a high-rise in Midtown Manhattan, when 29-year-old Shane Tamura opened fire, killing four people before fatally shooting himself. Among the victims was NYPD officer Didarul Islam, who responded to the scene. Three civilians also lost their lives during the rampage, which ended on the building’s 33rd floor.

The shooter, reportedly from Las Vegas and living with his parents, left behind more questions than answers. Authorities have not yet confirmed his motive, but a swirl of speculation has taken root, fueled by the building’s location, Tamura’s route, and, most curiously, the number 33.

Why the 33rd floor? Internet theories seek hidden meaning

One of the more bizarre elements of this case is Tamura’s decision to end his life on the 33rd floor of the skyscraper. This detail has sparked intense discussion on social media platforms, especially X (formerly Twitter), where users are pointing to numerology, secret societies, and even occult symbolism as possible factors.

While there’s no confirmed link between the floor number and Tamura’s motivations, conspiracy theorists are weaving narratives that blend theology, numerology, and institutional distrust.

What does the number 33 represent in conspiracy lore?

The number 33 holds significant weight in various fringe belief systems:

• Freemasonry: The 33rd degree is the highest level in the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, leading some to associate the number with secret influence or elite control.
• Christian symbolism: Jesus is believed to have been crucified at age 33, which has led some to tie the number to themes of sacrifice or martyrdom.
• Occult interpretations: Some groups claim 33 represents “one-third” of angels cast out of Heaven, linking it to satanic imagery and rebellion.

A viral post on X claimed:

“It is NOT coincidence that so many financial companies and various logos use Saturn (black cube) satanic occult symbolism. Blackstone is not an exception. Their rituals are getting more and more blatant.”

Though there’s no verified connection between any firm on the 33rd floor and such ideologies, these theories have taken on a life of their own, amplified by digital echo chambers.

Who owns the building? The Rudin Management connection

Another piece of speculative fuel: Rudin Management, a prominent New York real estate firm, owns 345 Park Avenue. Some users allege the company occupies or leases the 33rd floor and attempt to link the firm to broader theories.

One poster questioned:

“The 33rd floor is owned by Rudin Management. The Manhattan shooter drives from Vegas to NYC to go up to the 33rd floor? What’s New York in gematria?… 666! Rudin? 333!”

These claims lack factual grounding, but the rapid proliferation of such ideas illustrates how quickly misinformation can fill a vacuum when official explanations are slow to emerge.

Was this a targeted attack or a random act?

So far, no evidence has confirmed that Shane Tamura specifically targeted the 33rd floor for symbolic reasons. Investigators are likely exploring:

• Tamura’s mental health history: Reports indicate he struggled with mental illness.
• Digital footprint: Authorities are reviewing his devices and online activity for clues.
• Travel route: Tamura reportedly drove from Las Vegas to New York, a journey spanning over 2,500 miles. Why he chose New York—or this building in particular—remains unknown.

Until police release verified findings, it’s premature to conclude whether the floor number held real meaning to Tamura or was simply incidental.

Why conspiracy theories thrive in tragedy’s wake

Whenever public tragedies lack immediate clarity, conspiracy theories tend to flourish. These narratives offer a sense of control or explanation amid chaos and grief. They often:

• Appeal to emotional reasoning.
• Rely on coincidental patterns.
• Leverage mistrust in institutions.

According to The Atlantic, conspiracy beliefs spike after events like mass shootings or terror attacks, especially when official narratives are delayed or incomplete.

How should we interpret the online discourse?

While online speculation is common, it can also:

• Distract from real investigative efforts.
• Spread misinformation and stigmatize mental illness.
• Create panic or provoke copycat incidents.

Authorities have urged the public not to jump to conclusions and to await official updates. Meanwhile, media organizations face a delicate balance: covering what’s trending without legitimizing unfounded claims.

What we know so far and what remains unanswered
