CHICAGO (July 9, 2025) — A fast-moving storm brought intense downpours and flash flooding to parts of downtown and the West Side Tuesday night, catching many drivers off guard and leaving cars stranded in rising waters.

According to ABC7 AccuWeather Meteorologist Tracy Butler, radar estimates show that more than five inches of rain fell in just an hour and a half in Chicago, overwhelming drainage systems and transforming some roads into flood zones.

Chicago Officials Urge Caution: Turn Around, Don’t Drown

Emergency responders were called to assist with numerous water rescues throughout the city. Officials reiterated the long-standing safety message: “Turn around, don’t drown.”

Even shallow-looking floodwaters can be deceptively dangerous. Just six inches of water can cause a vehicle to lose control, and a foot of water can sweep away most cars.

Chicago Residents Advised to Remain Alert

With more storms in the forecast, residents are urged to stay updated through official weather channels and avoid driving through any flooded areas. ABC7 Chicago continues to provide 24/7 streaming weather coverage for up-to-the-minute alerts and updates.
