A 26-year-old US police officer and Army reservist, Wildelis Rosa, tragically died after undergoing a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) procedure in South Florida—a surgery that has gained immense popularity in recent years but remains one of the most dangerous cosmetic operations globally. Her death has been ruled as a pulmonary embolism caused by blood clots linked to the surgery, according to the Miami-Dade medical examiner.

Rosa’s passing is the latest in a disturbing pattern of cosmetic surgery-related deaths in the Miami area, where 25 fatalities have been recorded in just the past three and a half years, as per data from the county’s medical examiner.

From birthday celebrations to a fatal collapse

Rosa had her pre-op blood work done on March 19, and underwent the BBL procedure at Prestige Plastic Surgery Clinic the next day, March 20 — just days before her birthday.

• Fat was removed from 12 different areas of her body and injected into her buttocks.
• She paid $7,495 for the operation.
• She stayed at a short-term rental during recovery, which is a common practice among medical tourists and out-of-town patients.

Her sister, Anamin Vazquez, said the family wasn’t aware of the procedure until March 22, Rosa’s birthday. After not hearing back from her, Vazquez grew concerned.

The next morning, Rosa’s friend — who had been staying with her — found her collapsed in the bathroom, unresponsive. CPR was attempted, but she died on March 23, just one day after turning 26.

The Miami-Dade medical examiner attributed Rosa’s death to a pulmonary embolism, a blockage in the lung caused by blood clots — a known risk of surgeries like BBLs, which often involve long recovery times, limited mobility, and post-op complications.

Her symptoms before death included:

• Severe pain
• Trouble breathing
• Pale skin, purple lips, and dilated pupils
• No sensation in legs or feet
• Drastically low blood pressure

Despite attending a follow-up appointment after surgery and raising concerns about pain, she was reportedly sent back to her rental home. She died hours later.

South Florida, particularly Miami, has become a cosmetic surgery hotspot due to its low-cost clinics. But that reputation has come at a price.

• The BBL procedure has a fatality rate estimated between 1 in 3,000 to 1 in 5,000 — one of the highest for elective surgeries.
• In Miami-Dade alone, 25 people have died from cosmetic surgeries since 2021, as per the New York Post.
• Experts warn that fat embolisms — when fat is accidentally injected into large veins and travels to the heart or lungs — are a key cause of these deaths.

Some clinics have also faced criticism for high patient turnover, short recovery supervision, and aggressive marketing to young women, particularly women of color.
