Richard Hurst, the longtime character actor best known for playing Deputy Cletus Hogg on The Dukes of Hazzard, has died at the age of 79. His first wife, Candace Kaniecki, confirmed the news to TMZ, stating that his death was unexpected and the cause is currently unknown.

Hurst passed away on Thursday in Los Angeles.

A Sudden Loss for Fans and Family

The announcement comes just days before Hurst was scheduled to make an appearance at Cooter’s Place in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, a museum dedicated to The Dukes of Hazzard. The venue posted on Facebook Thursday morning, citing “unforeseen circumstances” for Hurst’s absence and noting that the event would be rescheduled — a sign that his death took even close associates by surprise.

Richard Hurst: A Familiar Face on Classic Television

Hurst’s portrayal of the lovable but bumbling Deputy Cletus Hogg — cousin to the infamous Boss Hogg — made him a fan favourite during the show’s original run from the late 1970s through the 1980s. He was a staple on Saturday night TV, bringing humour and warmth to the wild world of Hazzard County.

Beyond The Dukes of Hazzard, Hurst enjoyed a prolific career spanning decades and genres. His television credits read like a guide to classic American sitcoms and dramas:

• Sanford and Son
• The Partridge Family
• MASH*
• Gunsmoke
• The Bob Newhart Show

In film, Hurst made appearances in family-friendly and comedic cult hits, including The Cat from Outer Space (1978) and Mel Brooks’ History of the World: Part I (1981).

Acting Legacy Lives On Through His Son

Richard Hurst’s legacy also lives on through his son, actor Ryan Hurst, who carved out his own name in Hollywood. Best known for his roles as Opie in Sons of Anarchy and Gerry Bertier in Remember the Titans, Ryan has become a respected actor in his own right, often portraying deeply emotional and rugged characters.

Tributes and Remembrance

As news of Hurst’s passing spread, fans and fellow actors took to social media to share their memories and condolences. Many remembered him not only for his roles but for his kindness and approachability at fan conventions and meet-and-greets.

Hurst’s contribution to television spans an era when character actors like him helped shape the tone and soul of popular American storytelling. He was never always center stage, but his presence was felt — and remembered.

What’s Next

No memorial or service details have been announced at this time. Given Hurst’s strong ties to The Dukes of Hazzard fanbase, it’s likely that future tributes may take place at events like those hosted by Cooter’s Place or other classic TV conventions.
