American Mathematician Joshua Zahl, Who Solved The Century-Old Kakeya Conjecture, Is Moving To China: Here’s Why

Joshua Zahl, an American mathematician, made history earlier this year when he solved a century-old puzzle known as the Kakeya conjecture—a problem that has stumped some of the brightest mathematical minds for over 100 years. Working alongside Wang Hong of New York University, Zahl cracked the notoriously difficult three-dimensional version of the problem, earning accolades from across the global mathematics community.
Now, Zahl is in the spotlight again—not just for his breakthrough, but for his next move: leaving the University of British Columbia in Canada to take up a full-time position at the Chern Institute of Mathematics (CIM) in China’s Nankai University.
The Kakeya conjecture is a problem in geometric measure theory that explores how small a region can be while still allowing a needle (or line segment) to rotate through 360 degrees in all directions. While it might sound like an abstract curiosity, the conjecture is connected to deep areas of mathematics, including harmonic analysis, combinatorics, and even theoretical computer science.

The three-dimensional version of the conjecture, which Zahl and Wang solved, was particularly elusive. Their solution wasn’t just a single paper but a three-part “trilogy” culminating in a 127-page preprint released on arXiv.org. It tackled the problem step by step, building on previous foundational work, including ideas published in 2014 by Zahl’s doctoral mentor, Fields Medalist Terence Tao.
Tao, often dubbed the “Mozart of Math,” endorsed the solution the day after its release, calling it “spectacular progress in geometric measure theory” and noting that Zahl and Wang had effectively solved the three-dimensional Kakeya set conjecture. In Tao’s words, their work was like “perfecting a perpetual-motion machine. It’s magical.”
Zahl’s move to Nankai University isn’t just about geography. According to CIM’s website, Zahl praised the institute’s “intense academic atmosphere” and “excellent research team,” calling it an “ideal research platform.” He has been appointed a chair professor—an indication of the weight Nankai is placing on his presence.

He is not alone in making such a move. Zahl becomes the third internationally recognized mathematician to join the Chern Institute in recent months, part of a growing trend where China’s top universities are recruiting global talent in a bid to become leading players in frontier science and mathematics.
Founded in 1985 by the legendary Chinese mathematician Shiing-Shen Chern, CIM is widely respected for its contributions to differential geometry and mathematical research. Zahl’s decision to relocate reflects a growing recognition of the institute’s research environment as globally competitive.
Zahl and Wang’s collaboration has spanned several years, gradually building the tools and arguments needed to tackle the conjecture. Their work is laid out in three connected papers:

The result not only confirms what mathematicians had long suspected but also opens up new directions for related research in analysis and geometry.
Zahl is now in the running for the 2026 Fields Medal, mathematics’ highest honor and often referred to as the Nobel Prize of math. To be eligible, recipients must be under 40 and have made a major impact on the field. Zahl’s age and achievement make him a strong contender. He’s also expected to present a 45-minute talk at the next International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) in Philadelphia—a slot typically reserved for leaders in the field.
His move to China may signal not just a personal decision, but a broader shift in the global research landscape. As countries like China ramp up funding and infrastructure for high-level science, more top academics could follow a similar path.

Zahl’s relocation highlights a broader trend: the globalization of intellectual talent and the growing prestige of non-Western research institutions. Once seen as primarily talent exporters, universities in countries like China are increasingly becoming magnets for elite thinkers.
It’s also a quiet but significant statement about how scientific opportunity and recognition are no longer confined to North America or Europe. For students, educators, and institutions worldwide, Zahl’s decision underscores the importance of building robust, supportive ecosystems for research, regardless of geography.
Joshua Zahl, the American mathematician who recently solved the 100-year-old Kakeya conjecture, is moving from Canada’s University of British Columbia to China’s Nankai University. His groundbreaking work, done in collaboration with Wang Hong, has been recognized globally—including by Fields Medalist Terence Tao. Zahl praised Nankai’s research environment and will join the Chern Institute of Mathematics as a chair professor. The move reflects both his personal career trajectory and China’s growing influence in global mathematics research.
