80-Year-Old Drives Mercedes Sedan Down Rome’s Spanish Steps And Gets Stuck
June 19, 2025

In a scene that could easily pass for a surreal movie moment, an 80-year-old man drove a compact Mercedes-Benz A-Class sedan down the famed Spanish Steps in Rome early Tuesday morning, bringing traffic—literally and figuratively—to one of the city’s most treasured monuments. He didn’t get far.
The luxury vehicle got stuck partway down the staircase, prompting a police response and a delicate rescue operation involving firefighters and a crane. According to municipal police, the man tested negative for alcohol and appeared bewildered about how he ended up driving down the stairs at all.
He was cited on the spot for unauthorized access to a protected monument. Authorities did not release his name, and it remains unclear whether the vehicle was his or borrowed.

This isn’t the first time Rome’s 18th-century Spanish Steps have faced vehicular assault. Despite their obvious unsuitability for cars—made of 135 travertine stone steps designed exclusively for pedestrians—this is at least the second high-profile incident in recent years.
In 2022, a Saudi tourist made headlines after driving a rented Maserati down the same staircase. That act resulted in serious damage to the stonework and led to charges of aggravated damage to cultural heritage.
Rome’s authorities take these incidents seriously. The Spanish Steps are not only a major tourist destination but also a UNESCO-recognized cultural site. They’re protected by strict preservation laws that make any unauthorized interference—intentional or not—a potential criminal matter.

Built between 1723 and 1726, the Spanish Steps were designed by architects Francesco de Sanctis and Alessandro Specchi to connect the Trinità dei Monti church above with the Piazza di Spagna below. The staircase quickly became a centerpiece of Roman public life and a visual landmark in European art and cinema.
They’re named after the nearby Palazzo di Spagna, which houses the Spanish Embassy to the Holy See. Over the centuries, the steps have featured in countless films—from Roman Holiday to The Talented Mr. Ripley—solidifying their iconic status.
Today, they remain one of the most visited locations in Rome, offering a prime spot for people-watching, photography, and quiet moments amid the city’s bustling energy. Motor vehicles, it should go without saying, have no place there.

While authorities haven’t yet released details on how the driver accessed the steps, incidents like these highlight potential gaps in physical barriers and signage near the monument. In past cases, the city has reviewed access controls and added bollards and signage to protect vulnerable sites.
Still, urban preservation is a delicate balance in a city like Rome, where history lives side-by-side with modern traffic. Officials are likely to revisit protective measures following this latest incident.
Firefighters used a crane to remove the car, taking care not to cause further damage to the centuries-old staircase. As of now, no major structural damage has been reported, but a thorough inspection is underway.

It’s a fair question. While this latest incident appears to be accidental—possibly due to confusion, impaired judgment, or GPS misdirection—the 2022 Maserati case was clearly a reckless stunt.
The reasons vary, but a recurring theme is the lack of sufficient deterrents combined with a high number of tourists unfamiliar with Rome’s historic layout. Add in the growing number of GPS-dependent drivers and the chance of navigational mishaps increases.
Whether thrill-seeking or simply lost, these drivers put both cultural landmarks and public safety at risk. Experts have previously recommended integrating tech-based deterrents like automatic bollards or geofenced warnings for navigation apps near protected sites.

Social media in Italy lit up with disbelief and frustration. “Only in Rome would someone think driving down the Spanish Steps is a shortcut,” one user quipped on X (formerly Twitter). Others called for stricter enforcement and better education for tourists and local drivers alike.
Some expressed concern about the driver’s well-being and questioned whether an 80-year-old should still be behind the wheel. Italy, like many countries, has debated how best to evaluate driving capabilities in older adults, though age alone is not a legal disqualifier.
For now, the unnamed driver faces a fine and likely additional scrutiny depending on whether further investigation reveals negligence or other violations. Authorities will also examine whether he violated any preservation statutes that could carry harsher penalties.
As for the Spanish Steps, restoration experts will likely carry out a full assessment in the coming days. If damage is found, repairs could be extensive and costly, yet again highlighting the fragile tension between modern city life and centuries-old architecture.
