A 21-year-old Texas mother is on the run after police say she fatally scalded her infant son in boiling bath water, reportedly out of frustration because he soiled his diaper.

The horrific incident occurred in Hooks, Texas, on February 4, 2025, but an arrest warrant wasn’t issued until June 13. Authorities are still searching for the suspect, Jatoria Renae Cleamons, who faces charges of injury to a child and manslaughter.

What Happened?

According to KLTV 7, police responded to a medical emergency at a home where medics were attempting to save an 8-month-old boy. Despite their efforts, the infant died from severe thermal injuries caused by scalding water.

Cleamons allegedly admitted to placing her son in boiling water two weeks prior because she was angry he had defecated in his diaper. At the time, she was living with a relative in Hooks.

An autopsy confirmed the cause of death as scalding burns, and the case was ruled a homicide.

Why Was There a Delay in the Arrest Warrant?

One puzzling aspect of this case is the four-month gap between the baby’s death and the issuance of an arrest warrant. The Hooks Police Department has not publicly explained the delay, raising questions about the investigation’s timeline.

Where Is the Texas Mother Now?

As of June 16, Cleamons remains at large, despite false social media claims that she had been arrested. Police are urging the public to come forward with any information on her whereabouts.

A Pattern of Tragic Cases

This case echoes other horrific incidents where caregivers harmed infants over diaper-related frustrations. In a similar 2023 case, a 2-month-old baby died from a skull fracture after her mother assaulted her for soiling herself.

How Can Such Tragedies Be Prevented?

Child welfare advocates stress the importance of:

• Parental support programs for young, struggling caregivers.
• Mental health resources to manage frustration and stress.
• Community awareness to report signs of abuse.

What’s Next?

Authorities are intensifying efforts to locate Cleamons. Meanwhile, the case has sparked discussions about child protection laws and mental health interventions for at-risk parents.
