Experts suspect thrust loss or bird hit as the possible cause; investigation underway

Ahmedabad, India — June 12: A devastating air crash shook the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport this morning as an Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, en route to London, crashed moments after takeoff. The wide-bodied jet was carrying 242 people and was fully fueled for the long-haul journey to the UK.

While it is too early to determine the exact cause of the crash, preliminary analysis of the visuals and flight data has sparked concerns about a critical failure in lift or thrust just seconds after takeoff.

The plane lost altitude at just 825 feet

The aircraft, which had barely ascended to an altitude of 825 feet, appeared to struggle with the climb. According to early flight data, the crew made a desperate attempt to maintain altitude and control the aircraft before issuing a Mayday call. Moments later, the plane went down.

“Bird hit or configuration error possible,” say experts

Aviation analyst Sanjay Lazar weighed in on the tragedy, stating, “The cause could be anything from multiple bird hits to a wrong take-off configuration.” He emphasised that such incidents often involve a combination of mechanical and environmental factors, adding that a thorough investigation would be necessary to determine what went wrong in those critical seconds after liftoff.

Thrust loss suspected; landing gear still down

A key focus of the investigation will be on the aircraft’s engines. Experts have pointed out that the Dreamliner appears to have suffered a loss of thrust, a catastrophic failure when occurring at low altitude. Notably, the landing gears were still deployed during the attempted climb, which may have further impaired lift and drag efficiency.

Heavily loaded for long-haul flight

The aircraft, built for long-distance international travel, was heavily fueled to reach London. This full fuel load could have added to the aircraft’s weight, placing additional demands on engine performance and lift — particularly during a critical phase like takeoff.

Authorities have cordoned off the crash site, and teams from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and Air India’s internal safety division are en route to begin the official investigation. International aviation watchdogs, including Boeing and Rolls-Royce (which manufactures the Dreamliner’s engines), are expected to be involved in the probe.

Rescue and relief operations are ongoing. There has been no official confirmation yet on the number of casualties or survivors.
