Familiar face turns surprise visitor as wild elephant walks into local shop near Khao Yai National Park

In a scene straight out of a surreal comedy, a wild elephant named Plai Biang Lek wandered into a grocery store in Thailand’s Nakhon Ratchasima province on Monday afternoon, helping himself to a snack before calmly exiting the premises. The incident, which occurred at around 3 p.m. in the Pak Chong district, was captured on video and quickly went viral online.

Plai Biang Lek, a well-known resident of the nearby Khao Yai National Park, had previously been spotted roaming around villages near the park’s boundary. But this was the first time the tusker entered a shop, much to the surprise — and alarm — of locals.

“Locals are accustomed to seeing Plai Biang Lek passing by this particular store, but he has never before attempted to enter,” reported Khaosod English.

Store owner flees as towering visitor steps in

According to The Bangkok Post, the store owner was attending to a customer when the elephant wandered in. The pair immediately fled the scene and alerted local authorities. The shop is located just a kilometre from one of the park’s entrances — a frequent crossing point for elephants like Biang Lek.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic yet oddly calm. Surveillance footage shows the elephant towering over the aisles, toppling shelves with ease, and sniffing out snacks. Eventually, he settles on a packet of rice crackers before casually making his way out, leaving a trail of damage — but thankfully no injuries.
