Ukraine’s most daring long-range drone assault yet

In a stunning escalation of its drone warfare strategy, Ukraine carried out a bold and sophisticated strike on five major Russian airbases deep inside Russian territory, in what officials are calling Kyiv’s most long-range operation since the war began in 2022. The covert mission, dubbed Operation Spider’s Web, involved smuggling drones across the Russian border and launching them from concealed locations, causing widespread disruption to Russia’s strategic air fleet.

Covert deployment, concealed launch

According to sources within Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU), drones were covertly transported into Russia well in advance of the operation. The drones were ingeniously hidden beneath the roofs of wooden cabins mounted on trucks. At the moment of the attack, the cabin roofs were remotely opened, allowing the drones to launch toward their nearby targets—some of Russia’s most critical military airbases.

Photos released by the SBU show dozens of small, black drones packed into what appear to be modified transport containers. The clandestine nature of the launch points enabled the drones to fly short distances, maximizing their stealth and impact. Russia’s own defense ministry later confirmed the drones were not launched from Ukrainian soil, but rather from “the immediate vicinity of the airbases.”

Targets deep inside Russia

The strikes hit five airfields in the Murmansk, Irkutsk, Ivanovo, Ryazan, and Amur regions—some of them thousands of kilometers from the Ukrainian frontlines. Among the most heavily affected were the Belaya airbase in Irkutsk Oblast, approximately 4,300 kilometers from Ukraine’s border, and the Olenya airbase in Murmansk Oblast, about 2,000 kilometers from the nearest combat zone.

Video footage circulating online shows what appear to be Russian military aircraft engulfed in flames, with plumes of thick black smoke rising over tarmac in both Irkutsk and Murmansk. While Russia claimed to have repelled attacks on bases in the Ivanovo, Ryazan, and Amur regions, it acknowledged that several aircraft “caught fire” in Murmansk and Irkutsk.

Strategic damage to Russian air power

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said the drone assault, which involved 117 aircraft, had inflicted serious damage on Russia’s strategic capabilities. “This is our most long-range operation in more than three years of war,” Zelensky declared, calling the results “brilliant.”

According to the SBU, the attacks damaged or destroyed at least 41 Russian aircraft, including Tu-95 and Tu-22 long-range bombers and A-50 airborne early warning and control aircraft. These planes, Kyiv alleges, have been routinely used to bomb Ukrainian cities.

In a social media post, the SBU estimated the total damage at approximately $7 billion, a div that remains unconfirmed by Moscow. “$7 billion: This is the estimated cost of the enemy’s strategic aviation, which was hit today as a result of the SBU’s special operation,” the agency said.

Russia responds with arrests and denials

The Russian defense ministry admitted to some aircraft fires but downplayed the scope of the operation. “All terror attacks on military airfields in the Ivanovo, Ryazan, and Amur regions were repelled,” the ministry said, adding that “no casualties were reported either among servicemen or civilians.”

Russian authorities also claimed to have detained several individuals involved in the operation, including a truck driver allegedly connected to one of the drone launches.

Zelensky, however, insisted that the Ukrainians involved in planning and executing the attacks had already been “extracted from Russian territory in time.”

High stakes and geopolitical timing

The strike comes at a pivotal moment, as the war nears its third anniversary and diplomatic overtures begin to take shape. President Zelensky announced Sunday that he was dispatching a delegation to Istanbul, led by Defence Minister Rustem Umerov, for talks with Russian officials scheduled for Monday.

The talks, hosted by Turkey, reportedly come at the urging of U.S. President Donald Trump, who is pushing for a swift resolution to the conflict.

Zelensky has expressed skepticism about Russia’s intentions but emphasized Ukraine’s position going into the talks: “a complete and unconditional ceasefire” and the repatriation of prisoners and abducted children.

Russia, for its part, has said it is open to negotiations and has formulated its own peace proposals—but has refused to make them public ahead of the Istanbul meeting.

On Sunday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a phone call to discuss “several initiatives aimed at a political solution to the Ukraine crisis,” according to a Russian foreign ministry statement carried by TASS.

A turning point in drone warfare?

If confirmed, the effectiveness and scope of Operation Spider’s Web mark a major leap in Ukraine’s ability to conduct asymmetric warfare deep inside Russian territory. By combining stealth, logistics, and remote activation, the operation demonstrates a maturing strategy that could complicate Moscow’s ability to protect even its most distant assets.

Whether this bold new approach accelerates the path to peace—or further hardens positions on both sides—remains to be seen.
