Five suspects arrested as detectives recover nearly 300 stolen high-end bicycles linked to $1.7 million theft

A sophisticated cargo theft ring involving the theft of hundreds of high-end bikes while in transit to Los Angeles County has been busted, according to the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department.

Detectives say five men orchestrated a coordinated scheme, redirecting truck drivers and using box trucks and passenger vehicles to offload the stolen bikes and stash them in local warehouses.

The investigation ties back to a report filed on April 21 by ARI Bikes of Utah, which alerted authorities to the theft of 337 bicycles valued at approximately $1.7 million. The case was reported to the Sheriff’s Compton Station, triggering a broader probe by the department’s Cargo Criminal Apprehension Team.

288 bicycles recovered during multi-location raid

Working closely with ARI Bikes and members of the cycling community, detectives tracked the stolen merchandise to multiple locations. Acting on this intel, they executed two multi-location search warrants, recovering 288 stolen bicycles and other merchandise.

Five individuals were arrested and are now under investigation for their alleged roles in the bike theft:

• Samvel Karapetyan, 38
• Vazgen Avagyan, 36
• Narek Badalyan, 32
• Vladimir Gyulankaryan, 32
• Davit Grigoryan, 40

Detectives are still assessing each suspect’s involvement in the ARI Bikes theft.

Cargo theft tactics becoming more high-tech

Authorities say this case is part of a larger trend in cargo theft across Southern California, where criminals are increasingly exploiting electronic delivery systems to hijack valuable shipments.

“These thieves have moved beyond breaking into trailers and are getting into the electronic delivery system,” said Sheriff’s Capt. Calvin Mah.

In recent years, high-value goods such as computers, pharmaceuticals, and electronics have become frequent targets. Just last month, the Los Angeles Police Department recovered nearly $4 million in stolen cargo linked to a South American crime ring. The stolen haul included items such as coffee, tequila, footwear, pet food, and even bitcoin mining equipment.

The latest case underscores the growing complexity of cargo theft operations in Southern California and the importance of coordination between businesses and law enforcement in recovering stolen property.
