Devastating storm leaves couple severely injured as Kentucky reels from deadly tornado outbreak

Laurel County, KY — May 23, 2025: A Kentucky couple in their 60s lost an arm each while clinging to one another for safety during a violent tornado that tore through their home last week, according to their relatives. The heartbreaking ordeal, which has since captured national attention, occurred as part of a deadly storm system that ravaged the state, killing at least 19 people, the majority in Laurel County.

Paul and Gail Cline were inside their bedroom when the tornado struck their home with brutal force. According to a report by WLEX, their niece, Brandy Bowman, said the couple lost opposite arms because they were holding each other tightly when the storm hit. “They were holding each other,” Bowman said, describing how the couple’s deep bond persisted even through unimaginable trauma.

Pulled from the wreckage

A neighbour who heard their cries for help found them in the aftermath of the storm. The Clines were dragged from the wreckage of their home’s hallway by a rescuer. Bowman recalled the dramatic moment when help arrived: “She said, ‘I need help. I see an arm down the hallway.’” That arm turned out to be Gail’s.

The couple’s injuries were catastrophic. Gail suffered a punctured lung and is currently on life support, while Paul, who suffers from dementia, is recovering physically but has yet to fully comprehend the extent of the tragedy.

A family already in crisis

As if the storm’s devastation wasn’t enough, the family is also grappling with another tragedy — Gail’s daughter is battling stage 4 cancer. “They were already in the middle of a fight when this happened,” said Bowman. “Their home, vehicles, and everything they’ve worked for is gone. They are two of the best people you could ever find.”

A GoFundMe page has been set up to support the Clines and their extended family through this compounded crisis, calling for donations and prayers from the community.

“She needs all the prayers she can get”

In a social media post, another niece, Taylor Baker, confirmed the severity of the injuries. “My uncle Paul is stable but did have to have an arm amputated. My aunt Gail is on life support still and also had an arm taken off. She needs all the prayers she can get,” she wrote.

Baker also expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support from strangers and neighbors who have dropped off food and supplies for the family in the wake of the storm.

A community shattered

The tornado that struck Laurel County on Friday evening was part of a powerful system that swept across multiple counties, leaving widespread destruction. According to the Associated Press, 19 people died in Kentucky alone, and search and rescue operations continue in some of the hardest-hit areas.

As Paul and Gail Cline continue to fight for recovery, their story stands as both a testament to the terrifying force of nature and the enduring strength of human connection. Their loved ones, and an increasingly empathetic public, are rallying behind them, hoping that love, once again, can help them through.
