Heated exchange with photographer overshadows surprise Palme d’Or honour

Hollywood legend Denzel Washington made an unexpected splash at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, not for a film screening or a press conference — but for a tense altercation on the red carpet that has quickly gone viral.

The two-time Oscar-winning actor was involved in a heated exchange with a photographer, sparking a flurry of reactions across social media, even as he was later honored with a surprise honorary Palme d’Or for his remarkable contribution to cinema.

“Never put your hands on me again”

In the now-viral footage, captured moments before the evening’s ceremony began, Washington appears visibly upset after being touched by a photographer. The 69-year-old actor quickly turned to the man and warned him sternly: “Stop, stop, never put your hands on me again.”

Despite the warning, the photographer persisted, grabbing Washington’s arm — escalating the situation and visibly distressing the actor further.

Social media users were quick to express their support for Washington, calling out the photographer’s behaviour. “I think they are hassling Denzel, definite boundary violations to grab his arm like that,” one user commented. Another added, “Who are these two men jawing at him?” While a third speculated, “It’s my opinion that the guy grabbing Denzel looks like he is high under the influence of something.”

Surprise Palme d’Or adds gravitas to the night

Despite the incident, the night turned celebratory when festival organizers awarded Denzel Washington an honorary Palme d’Or, recognising his decades-long career spanning stage and screen. The honour came as a surprise and drew a standing ovation from the audience at the prestigious event.

Washington’s career began on the stage, including acclaimed work on Broadway, before he became one of Hollywood’s most enduring and respected divs. His filmography includes powerful performances in Malcolm X, The Equalizer series, Crimson Tide, Training Day, The Tragedy of Macbeth, and Fences, among others.

He is the recipient of numerous accolades, including Golden Globe Awards, Screen Actors Guild Awards, Critics’ Awards, and recognition at international festivals such as Berlin and Toronto.
