Polar bear biopsies reveal impact on Arctic pollution and climate change

Against the stark white backdrop of Norway’s Svalbard archipelago, a dramatic scene unfolded as researchers pursued one of the Arctic’s most iconic residents. A veterinarian, balanced precariously on a helicopter’s landing skid, took careful aim with a tranquilizer dart at a polar bear moving across the snow-covered landscape below.
Moments after the dart found its mark, the massive predator collapsed into the snowdrifts. Scientists quickly descended, collecting precious biological samples representing a groundbreaking approach to understanding how pollution and climate change affect these magnificent Arctic sentinels.
“The idea is to show as accurately as possible how the bears live in the wild — but in a lab,” Laura Pirard, a Belgian toxicologist, told AFP. “To do this, we take their (fatty) tissue, cut it in very thin slices and expose it to the stresses they face, in other words pollutants and stress hormones,” said Pirard, who developed the method.

The Norwegian Polar Institute’s research vessel Kronprins Haakon served as the expedition’s floating laboratory. After collecting tissue samples and fitting female bears with GPS tracking collars, the team quickly processed the specimens in a makeshift onboard lab.
These fat tissue biopsies represent the first time researchers have been able to directly study how environmental pollutants affect polar bear health in real time. The samples remain viable for several days, allowing scientists to expose them to controlled doses of pollutants and hormones before freezing them for more comprehensive analysis on the mainland.
Jon Aars, head of the Svalbard polar bear program, noted the team’s impressive results this season: “We had a good season,” he said. The researchers captured 53 bears, fitted 17 with satellite collars, and tracked 10 mothers with cubs or yearlings.

Analysis of the fat samples revealed significant presence of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) – synthetic chemicals used in industrial processes and consumer goods that persist in the environment for decades. These “forever chemicals” have become ubiquitous in Arctic ecosystems despite their distance from industrial centers.
Surprisingly, despite years of exposure to these pollutants, Svalbard’s polar bears showed no signs of emaciation or ill health. In fact, the local population has remained stable or even increased slightly, bucking the trend seen in other polar regions like Canada’s Western Hudson Bay, where bear numbers declined by 27 percent between 2016 and 2021.
Scientists estimate approximately 300 polar bears inhabit the Svalbard archipelago, with roughly 2,000 across the broader region stretching from the North Pole to the Barents Sea.

The research revealed that polar bears are demonstrating remarkable adaptability in the face of shrinking sea ice habitat. Their diets have begun to diversify as traditional hunting grounds diminish.
“They still hunt seals but they also take reindeer (and) eggs. They even eat grass (seaweed), even though that has no energy for them,” Aars told AFP. “If they have very little sea ice, they necessarily need to be on land,” he added, noting that they spend “much more time on land than they used to… 20 or 30 years ago.”
The team found no direct correlation between sea ice loss and higher concentrations of pollutants in Svalbard’s bears. Rather, differences in contaminant levels appeared related to dietary preferences, with the bears falling into two distinct categories – sedentary and pelagic – each consuming different prey and consequently accumulating different chemical profiles.

The expedition’s innovations extend beyond tissue sampling. Last year, researchers attached small “health log” cylinders to five female bears, devices that record vital signs like pulse and temperature. Combined with GPS tracking data, these instruments provide unprecedented insight into how the bears move, rest, and respond to their rapidly changing environment.
These technological advances come at a critical time. The Arctic region is warming at four times the global average, putting immense pressure on polar bears as their sea-ice habitat diminishes at an alarming rate.
Once hunted extensively throughout Svalbard, polar bears have slowly recovered since an international protection agreement was established in 1976. Today, they face an entirely different threat – not from hunters, but from the invisible forces of climate change and environmental contamination.
As the research vessel’s engines hummed against the vast Arctic silence and the team packed away their equipment, they left behind bears that remain the unwitting sentinels of a changing planet—their bodies and behaviors offering crucial clues to understanding our warming world.
