Action star bids emotional farewell to iconic Ethan Hunt character at prestigious film festival

The Cannes Film Festival erupted in thunderous applause last night as Tom Cruise presented the final chapter in his decades-spanning action franchise, “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.” The film’s premiere was met with an electric atmosphere and a five-minute standing ovation, marking an emotional conclusion to Cruise’s journey as the indomitable spy Ethan Hunt.

A spectacle befitting the franchise

The premiere event pulled out all the stops, featuring a 40-piece orchestra that welcomed attendees into the theater with the franchise’s instantly recognizable theme music. Audiences were captivated by the film’s death-defying stunts and groundbreaking action sequences, though some reports indicated that the extended runtime prompted a few viewers to depart the Palais before the conclusion.

Among the film’s most talked-about moments is a pulse-pounding three-minute knife fight sequence that takes place on a submarine, with Cruise’s character wearing only boxer briefs—yet another example of the actor’s commitment to performing his own stunts.

Emotional farewell

During the extended standing ovation, a visibly moved Tom Cruise clutched his heart and nodded gratefully to the audience. Both he and director Christopher McQuarrie were seen thanking special guests Zoe Saldaña and Marco Perego-Saldaña. As the applause continued, cameras captured reactions from each cast member, including Simon Pegg, Angela Bassett, and Hayley Atwell.

In his address to the audience, director McQuarrie expressed profound gratitude: “This response is why we do it. You are why we do it. The big screen experience is why we do it. Thank you all for being here and for supporting us. I want to thank this extraordinary cast — when I tell you how extraordinary they are, it wasn’t just showing up to work every day. This film was made during a pandemic and two industry strikes. These two films were made over a period of seven years with a lot of uncertainty, a lot of gaps in between their faith and their hard work, their dedication, their unquestioning devotion to this. This film would not be possible without the hard work of each and every one of these people standing up here. It’s the most extraordinary cast in the world.”

Cruise’s heartfelt response

Taking the microphone after McQuarrie, Tom Cruise shared a heartfelt reflection on his journey: “To be here in Cannes and have these moments — I mean as a kid when we were growing up, I really can’t even dream of something like this happening. I think McQ said it all, I’m just very grateful for 30 years to be able to entertain you with this franchise.”

The premiere represents not just the conclusion of a beloved action series, but the end of an era for Cruise, who has embodied the character of Ethan Hunt through all the highs and lows of his career since the franchise began in 1996.
