Banga calls media speculation “bunk” as tensions rise after terror attacks and retaliatory strikes

Washington, D.C. — Amid escalating tensions between India and Pakistan over the Indus Waters Treaty, World Bank President Ajay Banga has ruled out any intervention by the financial institution in resolving the deepening conflict. Banga emphasized that the World Bank’s role is strictly limited to that of a facilitator under the terms of the decades-old agreement.

Following his meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday, Banga issued a pointed clarification addressing speculation that the World Bank might step in to mediate the dispute.

“We have no role to play beyond a facilitator. There’s a lot of speculation in the media about how the World Bank will step in & fix the problem, but it’s all bunk,” Banga said, according to a statement released by the Press Information Bureau.

Signed in 1960 after nine years of negotiations mediated by the United Nations and the World Bank, the Indus Waters Treaty governs the distribution of water from the Indus River system between India and Pakistan.
