Security cabinet’s decision signals intensified military push as ceasefire hopes fade

TEL AVIV — Israel’s security cabinet has greenlit a sweeping new plan to capture and occupy the entire Gaza Strip for an indefinite period, a move that, if executed, could dramatically escalate the ongoing conflict and deepen what is already one of the worst humanitarian crises in the region’s recent history. The decision, reported by the Associated Press and confirmed by two Israeli officials, came during a vote held in the early hours of Monday morning.

The plan comes amid the collapse of ceasefire talks and growing international concern over the war’s expanding toll. It represents a significant shift in Israeli strategy, potentially extending its military footprint across Gaza in a sustained push to defeat Hamas.

A new phase in Israel’s war strategy

The cabinet’s decision follows a statement from Israel’s military chief declaring the call-up of tens of thousands of reserve soldiers. According to officials cited by AP, the approved plan includes “capturing of the strip and the holding of territories”—language that suggests a long-term military presence aimed at dismantling Hamas’ control and infrastructure.

In addition to ground operations, the plan outlines “powerful strikes against Hamas targets” and aims to prevent the militant group from distributing humanitarian aid, which Israeli authorities argue bolsters Hamas’ governance in Gaza. Israel has long accused the group of hoarding and misusing aid intended for civilians.

One Israeli official told the AP that the plan would be implemented in stages, although no specific timeline has been made public.

Humanitarian catastrophe deepens

The new strategy is already raising alarm among human rights organizations and international observers, who warn that it could intensify the suffering of civilians in Gaza. Since the collapse of a U.S.-brokered truce in mid-March, Israeli forces have launched relentless air and ground assaults across the enclave, resulting in hundreds of deaths and mass displacement. Reports suggest that Israel currently controls around 50% of Gaza.

Even before the ceasefire fell apart, Israel had halted deliveries of food, fuel, and water, effectively sealing off Gaza and plunging its population into extreme deprivation. The situation has since deteriorated into what aid agencies are calling the worst humanitarian crisis in the nearly 19-month-long conflict.

The proposed occupation would also force hundreds of thousands of Palestinians further south, exacerbating already overcrowded conditions and stretching humanitarian resources to the brink.

International backlash and stalled diplomacy

In a controversial move, Israel has reportedly been discussing a broader relocation plan for Gaza’s population, citing former U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposal for what it terms “voluntary emigration.” However, the idea has been met with swift condemnation from key European and Arab allies, many of whom view it as a violation of international law and a destabilizing force in the region.

Meanwhile, international mediators continue to struggle in their efforts to broker a new ceasefire. Despite Israel’s intensifying military pressure, Hamas has remained firm in its demands, including a complete end to the war. Israel, by contrast, has refused to agree to any ceasefire that does not ensure the total defeat of Hamas.

“The plan also included powerful strikes against Hamas targets,” an Israeli official confirmed, indicating that the coming weeks could bring even greater military escalation.

Political motivations and hostage pressure

The decision is also seen as part of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s strategy to increase pressure on Hamas to release Israeli hostages and to bring ceasefire negotiations in line with Israeli conditions. Analysts say the government is betting that greater military aggression could force Hamas into concessions — a gamble that has so far failed to yield diplomatic breakthroughs.

With no clear path to peace and military operations expanding, the conflict shows no sign of abating. As Israel moves to tighten its grip on Gaza, the international community watches with growing concern, warning that unchecked escalation could lead to an even more devastating chapter in the already protracted war.
