An unprecedented cleanup effort

Wise County, Texas — A tractor-trailer crash on U.S. Highway 287 in Wise County, Texas, early Tuesday, April 29, 2025, unleashed an extraordinary scene: eight million dimes, valued at $800,000, scattered across the roadway and surrounding brush. The overturned truck, carrying the loose coins, prompted a 14-hour cleanup operation involving shovels, vacuums, and meticulous hand-picking by local authorities and fire crews. The incident, captured on video, has raised questions about the unsecured transport of such a vast quantity of currency.

The crash, which injured two people, shut down a major highway and required an all-hands-on-deck response from the Alvord Fire Department and other local agencies. Here are key details about the chaotic event and its implications.

A highway littered with coins

The Alvord Fire Department confirmed to FOX 4 Dallas that the tractor-trailer was transporting eight million dimes when it veered off U.S. Highway 287, over-corrected, and flipped, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. The loose coins spilled across the road and into nearby vegetation, creating a logistical nightmare for responders.

Crews employed a combination of shovels, industrial vacuums, and manual collection to retrieve the dimes, with some officials seen picking up coins individually. Video footage from KDFW showed workers sweeping and shoveling the scattered change, a task that stretched nearly 14 hours and necessitated a full highway closure. Two individuals involved in the crash were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, authorities reported.

Unanswered questions about the spill

Why were the coins unsecured?

A striking detail of the incident is the absence of bankrolls or secure packaging for the dimes. Authorities have not clarified why the coins were transported loose, a decision that significantly complicated the recovery effort. The Wise County Sheriff’s Office and Alvord Fire Department did not respond to inquiries from BreezyScroll, leaving the circumstances surrounding the truck’s cargo and its journey unresolved.

The sheer volume of the spill—eight million coins—has sparked curiosity about the intended destination and purpose of the shipment. The lack of immediate answers underscores the unusual nature of the event and the challenges of securing such a valuable load.

A community effort amid disruption

The cleanup operation highlighted the dedication of local responders, who worked tirelessly to restore normalcy to U.S. Highway 287. The prolonged closure disrupted traffic in Wise County, a region unaccustomed to such an extraordinary incident. Images of the overturned truck and scattered coins, shared by KDFW, captured the scale of the challenge faced by crews.

While the financial loss was mitigated through the recovery efforts, the incident serves as a reminder of the vulnerabilities in transporting high-value goods. The injuries sustained in the crash, though not severe, further emphasize the risks associated with such accidents.

Looking ahead: Lessons from the spill

The dime spill on U.S. Highway 287 is a rare and remarkable event that has drawn national attention. As authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash and the decision to transport loose coins, the incident raises broader questions about cargo security and highway safety. The resilience of Wise County’s responders, who tackled an unprecedented challenge with determination, underscores the strength of community response in the face of disruption. For now, the image of crews sweeping up millions of dimes remains a vivid testament to an extraordinary day in Texas.
