University confirms the passing of P.J. Blue, tributes pour in from teammates and fans

P.J. Blue, a former linebacker for the Louisville Cardinals football team, has died at the age of 27. The University of Louisville confirmed his death in a statement posted on social media, expressing condolences to his family and loved ones. The cause of death has not been made public.

Who was P.J. Blue?

Originally from Montgomery, Alabama, Blue was a highly rated four-star recruit who committed to Louisville in 2016, turning down offers from top programs like Alabama and Clemson. However, his college career was hampered by injuries — including a torn ACL before his debut — that forced him to miss the 2017 and 2019 seasons.

Despite the setbacks, Blue managed to play in 11 games in 2018, starting in four of them. He recorded 39 tackles and two tackles for loss during that season before another injury effectively ended his playing career.

In high school, he earned recognition as an Under Armour All-American and a U.S. Army All-American nominee. He was also named to the All-Metro and first-team All-State teams while at Park Crossing High School. At the time of his recruitment, then-Louisville defensive coordinator Todd Grantham praised Blue’s potential and athleticism, saying, “Anytime you can get big guys who can run and hit, you’re going to be good on defense.”

Outpouring of grief on social media

News of Blue’s passing prompted an emotional response online, especially from teammates and college football fans.

“Rest Easy PJ. You were one of the good ones man,” one user wrote on X. Another added, “Still don’t believe it. feels like yesterday when we came in 2016.” Others expressed heartbreak and disbelief over the sudden loss.
