Tensions flare before the meeting even begins

It took just 90 seconds for weeks of intense diplomacy to unravel. Inside the Oval Office on Friday, President Donald Trump openly reprimanded Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, making it clear that, despite persistent efforts from U.S. allies, he remains determined to end Russia’s invasion—whether or not the terms favor Ukraine.

As Trump welcomed Zelensky, he initially described the meeting as an “exciting moment,” highlighting plans to sign a landmark deal granting the U.S. access to Ukraine’s critical minerals. The agreement was intended to be a stepping stone toward a broader peace deal with Russia.

A failed signing and a diplomatic breakdown

Just two hours later, Zelensky was seen leaving the West Wing in a hurry, his relationship with Ukraine’s most crucial ally appearing severely damaged.

The anticipated signing ceremony never took place, and any hope of a breakthrough with Russia vanished. Trump quickly took to social media, blasting Zelensky as ungrateful and accusing him of disrespecting the United States. According to Bloomberg, stunned officials in Washington and abroad were left questioning whether the rift could even be repaired.

Fox News reported that tensions had been building even before the meeting began. According to sources close to Zelensky, the Ukrainian president was presented with a “minerals-for-security” agreement ahead of the press briefing. However, the deal reportedly included no security guarantees for Ukraine against future Russian aggression.

Trump, Vance, and Zelensky clash in heated exchange

Before his visit, Zelensky had repeatedly insisted that security assurances were essential for any mineral deal. His refusal to sign the agreement angered both Trump and Vice President JD Vance.

As reporters asked their first questions, a heated exchange erupted between the leaders, with officials behind the scenes scrambling to understand how the situation had deteriorated so quickly.

“We cannot just sign an… agreement without any substantial guarantees,” a Ukrainian defense advisor told Fox News Digital. “It’s not going to work. It’s just going to reward the aggressor.”

Zelensky’s rejection of the deal fueled frustration from Trump and Vance, further escalating the confrontation.

Long-standing tensions and political implications

Trump’s frustration with Ukraine is not new. He has long viewed the country as a drain on U.S. resources, demanding security support when, in his view, it should instead seek a closer relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The failure to sign the mineral deal immediately sent shockwaves through the international community, particularly among key allies like the UK and Germany, who had been working to prevent Ukraine’s diplomatic isolation. The incident also reignited concerns in U.S. politics, with critics arguing that Trump remains too sympathetic toward Russia.

A tense moment sets the tone

The friction between the two leaders was evident from the start. As Zelensky arrived at the White House in his signature black wartime attire, Trump greeted him with a remark: “You’re all dressed up.” Since Russia’s invasion, Zelensky and his chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, have avoided wearing suits—though Yermak made an exception that day.

During the meeting, a pro-Trump reporter, Brian Glenn, pressed Zelensky further: “Why don’t you wear a suit? A lot of Americans have a problem with you not respecting the dignity of this office.”

Zelensky brushed off the comment, quipping that perhaps he would wear a suit once the war was over—though, he joked, it might be “something a little cheaper.”
