In a bold move, U.S. Senator Tina Smith has publicly criticized billionaire Elon Musk for his recent directive to federal employees. Musk, who leads the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), had instructed all federal workers to report their accomplishments from the past week in an email titled “What did you do last week?” by Monday at 11:59 p.m. This move was part of a broader effort to streamline government operations and reduce spending.

Senator Smith took to social media to express her support for federal workers, stating, “I hate to break it to you but you aren’t my boss. I answer to the people of Minnesota. But since you bring it up, I spent last week fighting to stop tax breaks for billionaires like you, paid for by defunding health care for moms and babies.” Her comments reflect a growing divide between lawmakers and the Trump administration’s efforts to reform the federal workforce.

Background and context

The directive from Musk followed praise from President Donald Trump, who encouraged Musk to be “more aggressive” in his efforts to reduce federal spending. Trump’s administration has been pushing for significant reforms, including buyout offers to over two million federal employees. Those who choose to leave voluntarily by a certain deadline are eligible for about eight months of salary.

Additionally, the Trump administration has faced criticism for dismissing 17 inspectors general from major federal agencies, further fueling tensions within the government.

Reaction and controversy

Musk’s email request sparked confusion and resistance among federal agencies. While some were instructed to comply, others were advised to ignore the directive due to concerns over its legality and potential impact on employee rights. The Office of Personnel Management later clarified that responding to the email was voluntary and would not be considered a resignation, contradicting Musk’s initial statement.

As the situation continues to unfold, Senator Smith’s stance highlights the ongoing debate over government efficiency and worker rights. Her comments underscore the challenges faced by lawmakers and federal employees alike in navigating the complex landscape of government reform.
