Iconic ocean liner departs Philadelphia for transformation off Florida’s Gulf Coast

The historic SS United States, once a marvel of American engineering, has embarked on its final journey from Philadelphia’s Delaware River waterfront. The legendary 1,000-foot ocean liner, which set a transatlantic speed record on its maiden voyage in 1952, is being towed to Mobile, Alabama, for preparations before it is eventually sunk off Florida’s Gulf Coast to become the world’s largest artificial reef.

A new purpose beneath the waves

Okaloosa County officials in Florida plan to turn the decommissioned vessel into a thriving artificial reef, adding to the region’s 500+ underwater structures. The site is expected to become a major diving attraction, contributing millions to the local economy through tourism, scuba diving, and fishing charters.

Originally scheduled to move in November, the relocation was delayed due to stability concerns raised by the US Coast Guard. However, after resolving a longstanding rent dispute and securing necessary approvals, the vessel finally set sail for its transformation.
