Nutella creator Francesco Rivella dies at 97

Francesco Rivella, the visionary behind Nutella, the world’s most beloved hazelnut spread, has passed away at the age of 97. According to Fox News, Rivella died on February 14.

A legacy of innovation

Tributes have poured in from around the world, with fans expressing gratitude for Rivella’s role in creating a product that has delighted millions.

Before developing Nutella, Rivella worked under Michele Ferrero, son of Pietro Ferrero, the founder of the renowned Ferrero chocolate brand. As a key member of the Ferrero team, Rivella was instrumental in studying raw materials, refining ingredients, and perfecting flavors—pioneering a spread that would become a global sensation.

The birth of Nutella

Originally launched in 1946 under the name Giandujot, the spread was derived from gianduja, a traditional Italian blend of chocolate and hazelnuts. Over the years, it evolved into Nutella, securing its place as a household favorite worldwide.

After a distinguished career at Ferrero, where he rose to the rank of senior manager, Rivella retired to focus on fruit farming and the traditional Italian sport of pallapugno.

Survived by family

Rivella is survived by his three sons, a daughter, and seven grandchildren, who carry on his legacy.
