New Federal Policy Creates Documentation Dilemma for Transgender Americans

A transgender influencer’s viral video has highlighted the immediate impacts of President Donald Trump’s recent executive order on gender recognition, bringing national attention to the policy’s real-world consequences for the transgender community.

“They changed my gender to male because of Donald Trump,” digital creator Perysian Zaya Mekhi revealed in a widely shared Instagram video. The content creator, who has undergone complete gender confirmation surgery, discovered that her new passport listed her sex as male, despite her other official documents recognizing her as female.

In her video testimony, Mekhi presented the official correspondence she received alongside her passport. The letter stated that the sex marker was “corrected” to match existing records, seemingly reverting to her childhood documentation rather than acknowledging her legally updated status.

Executive order details

The controversy stems from President Trump’s decisive action on gender recognition. “As of today, it will henceforth be the official policy of the United States government that there are only two genders: male and female,” Trump declared in his inaugural address. The administration also moved to dismantle previous DEI initiatives, specifically citing the reversal of LGBTQ equality measures implemented during the Biden presidency.

Public responses reveal deep divisions

The social media response to Mekhi’s situation reflects the nation’s polarized views on gender identity:

Supportive reactions

Numerous users expressed solidarity with Mekhi, with one commenting, “I’m so sorry, Zaya, this is wrong. It sickens me that this is the reality we live in. I did not vote for this darling.”

Opposition views

Others endorsed the policy change, with some users questioning the legitimacy of gender transitions altogether.

Legal recourse

Mekhi has indicated her intention to pursue legal options to update her passport’s gender marker, potentially setting the stage for one of the first legal challenges to the new federal gender recognition policy.

The situation continues to develop as more transgender Americans encounter similar documentation challenges under the new administration’s policies.
