In a moving tribute that also served to quiet recent speculation about her marriage, former First Lady Michelle Obama announced plans to commemorate Hadiya Pendleton at the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago.

“To this day, I carry Hadiya’s story with me everywhere I go. She had an extraordinary light that will not be forgotten, and Barack and I look forward to honoring her memory through a dedicated space at the Obama Presidential Center,” Mrs. Obama shared in an Instagram message on Wednesday.

Pendleton, a promising honor roll student who performed at President Obama’s second inauguration, tragically lost her life in 2013. The planned memorial garden will serve as a lasting tribute to her memory at the Chicago facility.

The announcement comes during a period of reduced public visibility for the former First Lady, following the loss of her mother, Marian Robinson, in May. During her appearance at the Democratic National Convention in August, Mrs. Obama spoke candidly about her grief, revealing that she “wasn’t even sure I’d be steady enough to stand before you tonight.”

Despite her personal challenges, Mrs. Obama has maintained her political engagement, notably supporting former Vice President Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign. However, her absence from certain high-profile events, including President Jimmy Carter‘s funeral and President Trump’s swearing-in ceremony, sparked public discussion.

Through the Obama Presidential Center initiative, the former First Couple continues their commitment to public service and community remembrance. The Center’s dedication to Hadiya Pendleton’s memory reflects their ongoing connection to Chicago and its communities while demonstrating their united approach to public service projects.

The memorial garden announcement, made through both Instagram and the Center’s official website, reaffirms the Obamas’ shared vision for their post-presidential work and their enduring commitment to honoring young lives lost to violence.
