Explosives used in daring heist at the Drents Museum

Thieves executed a high-profile heist at the Drents Museum in Assen, Netherlands, early Saturday morning, stealing four priceless ancient artifacts, including the 2,500-year-old Helmet of Cotofenesti. According to Dutch police, the break-in involved the use of explosives to force entry.

The police reported receiving a call about an explosion at 3:45 a.m. local time. CCTV footage reveals the suspects using explosives to blow open an exterior door, with sparks and smoke filling the area before they made their escape.

Stolen treasures include Dacian artifacts

The stolen items include three gold bracelets, believed to date back to 50 BC, and the Helmet of Cotofenesti, a 5th-century BC masterpiece of Dacian origin. The helmet, which was on loan from the National History Museum of Romania, is considered a culturally significant artifact.

Police launch international investigation

Museum director expresses shock

Harry Tupan, general director of the Drents Museum, described the robbery as a “dark day” for both his institution and the National History Museum of Romania.

“We are intensely shocked by the events last night at the museum,” Tupan said in a statement. “In its 170-year existence, there has never been such a major incident. It also gives us enormous sadness towards our colleagues in Romania.”
