Co-founder of Ledger and partner abducted in shocking ransom case

French authorities have apprehended 10 individuals suspected of kidnapping and torturing David Balland, co-founder of Ledger, a globally renowned cryptocurrency security company, along with his partner. Paris prosecutors confirmed the arrests, with the case set to be transferred to anti-gang investigators for further probing.

The arrests were made late Thursday, involving nine men and one woman. Among them, three suspects were detained in Châteauroux, central France, and another three in Étampes, near Paris.

Mutilation, ransom demands, and a video alert

David Balland and his partner were abducted early Tuesday from their residence in Méreau, located in France’s Loire region. Another Ledger co-founder, Eric Larchevêque, contacted authorities after receiving a disturbing video. The footage showed a mutilated finger belonging to Balland, accompanied by a ransom demand.

Prosecutor Laure Beccuau revealed that the kidnappers demanded “a large cryptocurrency sum” as ransom. Although she declined to specify the amount, Beccuau confirmed that a portion was handed over during police-negotiated talks. Balland was rescued on Wednesday and immediately hospitalized for treatment of his injuries. His partner, held separately, was discovered tied up in a car.

Suspects under investigation for organized crime

Prosecutors indicated that most of the suspects were already known to law enforcement for previous offenses. However, none had prior records of gang-related crimes. Authorities are now pursuing potential charges for gang-related kidnapping, acts of torture, and armed extortion.
