Vivek Ramaswamy, the 39-year-old co-leader of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), is rumored to be stepping down from his position to launch a campaign for governor of Ohio by the end of January. The news comes amid alleged internal tensions within DOGE, an advisory organization created by President-elect Donald Trump to streamline government operations.

Conflict with Elon Musk and DOGE staff

Reports of friction between Ramaswamy and DOGE staff, including co-leader Elon Musk, have surfaced. Sources indicate that Musk has expressed dissatisfaction with Ramaswamy’s level of involvement in DOGE initiatives. Insiders close to Musk and members of the task force have reportedly urged Ramaswamy to depart.

“Vivek has worn out his welcome,” a source close to Donald Trump told CBS News.

Ramaswamy recently sought appointment to Ohio’s vacant Senate seat, left open by Vice President-elect JD Vance. However, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine announced on Friday that his lieutenant governor would take the position instead, leaving Ramaswamy to focus on his gubernatorial ambitions.

DOGE’s mission and Ramaswamy’s role

The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), an advisory body, was established by Donald Trump to work alongside the White House and the Office of Management and Budget. Its goal is to reorganize federal agencies, cut costs, and improve operational efficiency by 2026.

Although Ramaswamy and Musk initially collaborated closely—reportedly drafting plans on a napkin during a meeting at Mar-a-Lago—their working relationship has since cooled.

Ramaswamy’s background and political identity

Before entering politics, Ramaswamy amassed significant wealth managing hedge funds and co-founding a biotechnology firm, which he later sold. A Yale Law School graduate, he studied alongside JD Vance. Known for his resistance to “woke” policies, Ramaswamy ran as a GOP presidential candidate in 2024, frequently aligning with Trump on cultural issues.

Speculation on Ramaswamy’s next move

Rumors of Ramaswamy’s departure from DOGE have been circulating for weeks. Initial reports by Politico were recently confirmed by CBS News, adding momentum to speculation about his political future.

With the Ohio governor’s race on the horizon, Ramaswamy’s departure from DOGE may mark a significant shift in his career trajectory. Whether this move strengthens his political standing or sidelines him from the national stage remains to be seen.
