Former First Lady cites personal choice as Barack Obama confirms attendance

Former First Lady Michelle Obama will not attend Donald Trump’s upcoming inauguration, her office announced on Tuesday. The decision marks a significant departure from the traditional role of former presidents and first ladies, who typically attend the swearing-in ceremonies of their successors.

The Office of Barack and Michelle Obama confirmed that while Michelle Obama will not be present, former President Barack Obama will attend the 60th Inaugural Ceremonies, adhering to protocol.

Confirmed attendees: A blend of tradition and tension

While Michelle Obama’s absence has raised eyebrows, other prominent divs from past administrations will uphold tradition. Former President George W. Bush and former First Lady Laura Bush have confirmed their attendance. CNN was also informed by people with knowledge of the situation that Hillary Clinton and former President Bill Clinton will be present.

The news comes shortly after Michelle skipped another key political event—the memorial service for former President Jimmy Carter. Barack Obama was in attendance, spotted briefly chatting with Trump before the program began. Hillary Clinton and Laura Bush also attended the memorial, but Michelle remained in Hawaii during the event.

A history of tensions with Donald Trump

Michelle Obama’s decision to skip the inauguration reflects years of tension with Donald Trump. She has been a vocal critic of the former president, accusing him of endangering her family with his divisive rhetoric. Despite her strong feelings, Michelle hosted Trump and Melania for tea at the White House in 2017 before his first inauguration, a gesture of respect for tradition.

In her 2023 podcast, Michelle candidly reflected on attending Trump’s first inauguration, describing the experience as emotionally difficult. “There were tears, there was that emotion. But then to sit on that stage and watch the opposite of what we represented on display—there was no diversity, there was no color on that stage, there was no reflection of the broader sense of America,” she said.

The tension goes both ways: Donald and Melania Trump notably skipped President Joe Biden’s inauguration in 2021, a break with presidential tradition that underscored the polarized political climate.

Broader implications

Michelle Obama’s absence underscores the growing partisan divides in American politics, even as other former presidents and first ladies attempt to maintain decorum by attending the ceremony. Her decision also reflects her convictions, as she continues to voice her disapproval of Trump’s leadership and values.

With the ceremony set to take place amidst this backdrop of divided traditions, the event promises to highlight both the enduring rituals of democracy and the evolving dynamics of political relationships.
