Five years after COVID-19 first emerged in Wuhan, China, the World Health Organization (WHO) has renewed its urgent call for Chinese cooperation in understanding the pandemic’s origins, highlighting persistent gaps in global health security and pandemic preparedness.

This is a moral and scientific imperative,” the WHO declared in a statement marking the pandemic’s fifth anniversary. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus recently addressed the state of global pandemic preparedness with measured optimism. “If the next pandemic arrived today, the world would still face some of the same weaknesses and vulnerabilities that gave COVID-19 a foothold five years ago,” he noted at a recent press conference.
