California authorities successfully used an infrared-equipped drone to locate a missing 78-year-old man on Christmas Eve. The man, who suffers from early-onset dementia, went missing while retrieving his mail, prompting an urgent search effort by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Malibu Search and Rescue (SAR) Team.

Heat-seeking drone leads rescuers to critical discovery

Malibu SAR deployed multiple drones, including one equipped with cutting-edge infrared heat-seeking technology, to assist in the search. According to a statement from the Sheriff’s Office, the advanced drone detected “a significant heat signature over the side of the roadway in thick brush.”

A Malibu SAR drone pilot operated the console during the search, using the infrared screen to pinpoint the man’s location. The technology proved crucial in identifying the motionless div hidden in dense vegetation.
