This is not Piana’s first encounter with danger underground. In July 2023, she was trapped for approximately 40 hours in the same cave system. Despite criticism from some quarters, rescue officials have defended her expertise. Catania emphasized that Piana is a skilled and well-prepared speleologist, dismissing claims of irresponsibility.
