In a symbolic gesture of environmental stewardship, Pope Francis has been presented with a cutting-edge electric ‘Popemobile’ by Mercedes-Benz, further solidifying his stance on global climate action and sustainable transportation.
The custom-designed vehicle, a modified Mercedes G-Class, represents a significant step in the Vatican’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions.
Featuring a raised seat under a glass canopy, the ‘Popemobile’ is specifically engineered to allow the pontiff to interact with pilgrims at St. Peter’s Square.

“The pearl-white car is powered by an electric motor that is adapted to the particularly low speeds required for public appearances,” Mercedes-Benz explained in a statement.
Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Kallenius personally delivered the vehicle to Pope Francis at the Vatican, describing it as “a special honor for our company.” The automaker has been supplying ‘Popemobiles’ to the Vatican for the past 45 years.
This is not the Vatican’s first foray into electric vehicles. In 2012, Renault previously presented Pope Benedict XVI with an electric people carrier, signaling an early commitment to sustainable transportation.
