Surveillance footage obtained by investigators provides a harrowing account of the assassination. The video shows an unidentified suspect emerging from behind a parked car, methodically targeting Thompson’s back and firing multiple shots. NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny noted the shooter’s apparent proficiency with firearms, observing how quickly he managed to clear a gun malfunction during the attack.

A calculated escape

The shooter, described as wearing a jacket, face mask, and large backpack, fled the scene on foot before escaping on an electric bicycle into Central Park. This carefully orchestrated getaway prompted an extensive manhunt involving police drones, helicopters, and canine units.

Potential threats and underlying tensions

Paulette Thompson, the victim’s wife, revealed to NBC News that her husband had previously mentioned receiving threats. While she couldn’t provide specific details, she suggested these threats might have been related to insurance coverage issues.

UnitedHealth Group Inc. expressed deep sorrow, describing Thompson as “a highly respected colleague and friend to all who worked with him.” The company stated they are cooperating fully with the New York Police Department’s investigation.
