Ancient Incan site implements stricter measures following controversial TikTok video

Peruvian authorities have strengthened security measures at the iconic Machu Picchu following a controversial incident where tourists were filmed dispersing what appeared to be ashes at the sacred site.

The incident

A TikTok video that sparked national outrage in Peru showed a woman removing ashes from a plastic bag and releasing them into the air at the historic site, followed by an emotional embrace with another visitor. The 30-second clip, initially shared on the travel agency account @IncaGoExpeditions, was later removed from the platform but not before causing significant public concern.

Official response

“We are implementing comprehensive security upgrades across the site,” says Cesar Medina, head of Machu Picchu Archaeological Park, in a statement to AFP. The new measures include:

• Additional security personnel
• Enhanced surveillance camera network
• New regulations regarding ash dispersal

Legal considerations

While no existing laws specifically prohibited the spreading of human ashes in public spaces, authorities are now moving to ban the practice at Machu Picchu, citing public health concerns. This marks a significant shift in site management policies.

Current site protection

The UNESCO World Heritage site, which receives approximately 5,600 daily visitors, has been operating with minimal security infrastructure:

• Only four surveillance cameras
• A small security team
• Limited monitoring capabilities

Historical significance

Built in the 15th century under Incan emperor Pachacuti, Machu Picchu stands at an impressive altitude of 2,438 meters in the Peruvian Andes. Its cultural and historical importance makes proper preservation crucial for future generations.

Looking forward

The incident has sparked broader discussions about:

• Appropriate behavior at historical sites
• Balancing tourism with preservation
• Respect for cultural heritage
• Modern social media influence on ancient sites

Tourism impact

While authorities work to implement these new security measures, they emphasize that the site remains open to visitors. However, tourists will need to adhere to stricter guidelines designed to protect this invaluable historical treasure.
